Boondall Figure Ice Skating Club (BFISC) will blend holiday cheer and contemporary entertainment at its popular Annual Ice Spectacular.
This year’s frosty festivity, Pop! Into Christmas, promises to dazzle audiences with three performances at Boondall Iceworld on Saturday, 14 December.
Show director and choreographer Kate Endriulaitis said a Christmas-themed show was always a crowd-pleaser.
“This year we’re putting a modern spin on it — instead of traditional Christmas carols, we’ve choreographed the performances to a collection of more modern holiday pop hits,” Kate said. “I figured it’d be a fun way to blend the nostalgia of the season with some fresh energy.
“We’ve poured our hearts into creating a show for all ages that will make audiences want to sing and bop along in their seats.”
The Ice Spectacular will feature some of the club’s most seasoned competitive skaters, rising stars and the youngest members from the learn-to-skate program.
“It serves not only as a showcase for our elite athletic talent, but also as a platform for nurturing the next generation of figure skating stars in a non-competitive, fun, and social environment,” said Kate.
Skating Talent and Holiday Tradition
Among the talented cast is Courtney Mackay, 20, who has been figure skating since the age of five and took first place in the 2023 Queensland Figure Skating Championships in the Adult Silver Women’s division.
Courtney said her advice for aspiring skaters was, “Never give up, just keep going and you’ll get there”.
“This quote has stuck with me for my entire skating journey, ‘Don’t practice until you get it right, practice until you can’t get it wrong’,” she said.
She added that she was looking forward to this year’s show, in particular, wearing the fun Christmas costumes.
Kate said BFISC’s Ice Spectacular had become a beloved tradition for the skaters at the end of the competition season.
“We’ve curated a show that not only highlights the incredible talent within Australia’s figure skating community but also captures the magic and joy of the holiday season,” she said. “It’s an event that will inspire and entertain audiences of all ages. Perhaps Australia’s next figure skating champion will be seated in the audience and we’ll inspire them to learn to skate. Who knows?”
