Get ready for a night of local music and community spirit as the Sandgate Live Music Show makes its return this month.

The event takes place on Saturday, 22 November at the Sandgate Community Centre, with all proceeds going to SANDBAG Inc to support vital community programs.

Organiser Robert Purnell, a long-time Sandgate local with decades of experience running live music events, said he wanted to back a local charity making a real difference.

“I want to try and keep it all local,” he said. “It seems to me every time I’ve done a show in Sandgate, that people in Sandgate really support it.”

The lineup features a mix of local favourites, including Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out, well-known for their 60s tunes, Fat Chance, and Frau Blucher. Special guests include Rick Young, Suzie Purnell, and Elvis impersonator Rock Vegas.

“I believe he’s probably the oldest Elvis impersonator – he’s 82 years old,” Robert said. “He wears the full Elvis gear, which he imported from America. He looks fabulous, and you wouldn’t believe he was 82.”

A seasoned musician himself, Robert has toured with AC/DC, Sherbet and Ted Mulry Gang, and he’ll be picking up the bass at this month’s show with Frau Blucher.

“The reason why I’m in that band is because my two sons are in the same band,” he said. “So, I get to play with my eldest son on my left-hand side and my youngest son on my right-hand side. We play classic rock songs: Grinspoon, The Living End, The Beatles, Cream.”

Robert chose the Senior Citizens Hall for its excellent acoustics. Sound and lighting will be handled by Mick Hogan, who recently worked with The Screaming Jets.

“It’s very important to me that the sound is good,” Robert said. “It’s a really professional light show, it’s a top-quality sound system.

“When I put a show on, I want it to be something that people can remember.”

Guests can also enjoy a buffet (available at an additional cost of $35 and $30 for concession), with options like sweet and sour pork, carbonara, veggie lasagna, and more.

The event will also include a raffle, with prizes donated by local businesses, including Woolworths, Jason’s Quality Meats, and the Sandgate Fishmonger.

Robert said last year’s event drew over 450 attendees and raised around $3600 for SANDBAG, which went towards installing much-needed air conditioning.

“I’m actually really looking forward to this one,” he said.

Tickets are $10. Go to www.eventbrite.com.au and search ‘SANDBAG LIVE’ or purchase at the door on the night.
