Let’s begin with the basics: what is women’s health, and why is it so important?

Women’s health encompasses the physical and mental well-being of women throughout every stage of life. Prioritising women’s health ensures that women can thrive and reach their full potential. Women experience unique health needs, including reproductive health, menstrual health, menopause, mental wellness, pregnancy and the management of certain chronic conditions.

Although support and technological advancements have improved, stigma and silence around women’s health persist. Open conversation is essential – this is not a topic to be whispered about. Many young girls and even adult women lack comprehensive knowledge about their own health, particularly regarding the menstrual cycle, menopause, and other significant life stages for half the population. This gap in education must be addressed.

Breaking the Stigma and Supporting Change

Several organisations are already leading the change, such as Share the Dignity, the Sisterhood Foundation, the Foundation for Female Health Awareness, and the Liptember Foundation. These groups work to raise awareness, provide education, and promote open discussion about women’s health, helping to dismantle stigma and empower future generations.

Women’s health is a vital issue that deserves continuous attention and research. Supporting it can be as simple as donating to women’s health foundations, engaging in open conversations with daughters and peers, and helping to normalise these discussions in everyday life.
