The most anticipated event on the Sandgate calendar returns on 27 July with the annual Einbunpin Festival.

Now in its 33rd year, the festival is a mainstay of the 4017 community and a highlight of the bayside winter months.

Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy said the organising committee had been overwhelmed with support from local sponsors.

“It’s the largest community sponsorship we’ve ever had for Einbunpin, so the festival is set to be bigger and better than ever this year,” he said.

“For a lot of people, this is an event that is a huge part of the Sandgate calendar, it’s something they look forward to each year.

“There’s a real sense of excitement this year, and I think there’s been a renewal of that since the 30th anniversary a few years ago.”

This year’s major sponsors include The Sands Social, Sandgate Home Assist Secure, EBM Solicitors, The Full Moon Hotel, State MP for Sandgate Bisma Asif, Federal MP for Lilley Anika Wells, and Kuhn Corp Print and Packing. The whole event comes under the auspices of SANDBAG.

“The first festival was roving performers and a car boot sale, so to go from that to one of the biggest community festivals in Brisbane is amazing,” Cr Cassidy said.

This Year’s Highlights

The 2025 festival will feature all the community favourites that 4017 residents have come to expect including the egg and spoon races and the iconic mullet toss.

“Thanks to our level of sponsorship, we have some really great prizes this year for the egg and spoon and the mullet tossing,” Cr Cassidy said.

“There’s something for all ages, and you can really spend the whole day there if you wanted to.”

The festival will have three stages for entertainment, with everyone from local musicians and bands performing to school groups.

There’s plenty of free activities for children including art classes and story time, as well as rides and sideshow alley games.

“We have more than 100 stalls this year, some of which people seek out every year like the Nashville State School jam stall and the men’s shed raffle,” Cr Cassidy said.

“There are plenty of quality, artisan goods that people can afford.”

A feature of this year’s festival is the completion of the letter art project, with the new Einbunpin sign by local artist Kim Mancini.

“It’s going to be like the Hollywood sign but better,” Cr Cassidy said. “The letter sign will be something we can bring out year after year, and it’s the perfect place to get a selfie.”

Penny-farthing bikes also make a return this year, and there will be food options for every taste.

Some new festival mascots will be making their debut with a turtle, ibis, water hen and an eel, the fresh symbols of the lagoon and its surrounds.

Come One Come All

Cr Cassidy added there would be more seating options this year, so festivalgoers could relax and take in the entertainment.

“People who are new to the area have really embraced the Einbunpin Festival, as well as our long-term residents, some of whom have been coming since the beginning,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing people from our local community and from right across Brisbane in Sandgate.”
