Art lovers from across Brisbane are heading to the northside for the Sandgate Art Society (SasArt) Creative Trail.

Being held in the final two weekends of October, the trail brings together more than 40 artists across 22 locations, including home studios, local galleries and creative businesses.

Creative Arts Trail representative, Kylie Davidson, said the event was an opportunity to see the “incredible creatives” who live and work locally.

“We’re a creative bunch here in the 4017,” she said.

“There will be workshops, artist talks and demonstrations, as well as a chance to see where artists work and learn some tips and techniques as well.”

The key to navigating the trail comes in the form of a quirky local map, available to download in digital form or pick up a paper version.

Oversized versions of the map will also soon start appearing on front fences around Sandgate, Deagon, Bracken Ridge, Brighton and Shorncliffe, indicating a stop on the trail.

“The map features local landmarks like the Town Hall, prawn trawlers and even the skate park,” Kylie said.

“We have a digital map linked to a customised Google map so it’s easy for people to navigate their way round. And we have paper maps as well, which will be available at libraries, cafes and art shops.”

This year’s re-branded trail is bigger and better than ever, featuring children’s art events for the first time with Brighton art school, Etched Artworks, joining the fun.

“We’re also excited to have our two biggest community non-profits on board, with SANDBAG and Womenspace, as we want this to be an inclusive event,” Kylie said.

“People coming to the trail will see paintings, sculpture, paper art, jewellery, assemblages, printing, artistic bookmaking, artisan cheese making, pottery, photography, mosaic and collage.

“We have some amazing support from local businesses, including Kartia Designs, Myrtle and Blossom and Bluenose Betty.

“The 4017 community has always been very supportive of artists and we see this event as for people who might not ever find themselves walking into a gallery.

“It’s for anyone who aspires to be a little more creative in their own lives as well.”
