The Sandgate Art Society (SasArt) Easter Art Show is as much a part of the 4017’s long weekend as chocolate eggs.
And with 80 artists exhibiting multiple works, there’s something for every art lover.
Organising committee member, Bethany Cooke, said this year’s show was bigger and better than ever.
“The Easter show aims to be an inclusive event where everyone is welcome, and people can interact with the artists,” she said.
“From beginner artists who are showing off their work for the first time, to veteran artists who are well known in the region, we have it all.
“The show will run a day more than last year, so we are expecting a lot more people.”
There are several prizes on offer for artists, including Best in Show, Best 2D Art, Best 3D Art, Photography/Digital Media, the Grace Cross Memorial Award for textile and mixed media, an Encouragement Award, and a Youth Encouragement Award for artists aged 12 to 17.
The opening night of the show is a chance for the public to see the winning artworks and chat with the artists.
“Ever wondered what an artist’s inspiration was? Many artists come to the event night to mingle, so this is your chance to find out,” Bethany said.
“There will be nibbles, drinks and a fabulous raffle up for grabs as well.”
A Bayside Tradition: Art, History, and Community Support
The show coincides with the popular Bluewater Festival, and visitors to the Sandgate/Shorncliffe area are being encouraged to take a walk up the hill to St Patrick’s College to enjoy some art.
“We get such a wide range of artworks from paintings of the foreshore to a stitchwork portrait, to a sculpture of a dog,” Bethany said. “There is something for everyone.”
Bethany added that SasArt was grateful for the support of the 4017 community and noted many artists exhibiting in the show were locals.
“Sandgate has long been an inspiration for artwork and community since being founded in 1853,” she said.
“And that’s not even counting the thousands of years as a home for Indigenous Australians.
“There are lots of local businesses which support us in different ways as well. This year has also been bigger in the number of sponsors we have from local businesses.
“The best news is everything at the art show is for sale. It’s the perfect time to grab a unique gift for a loved one.”
