In the heart of Sandgate, a passionate educator is changing the way children learn to read and write. Open Book Tutoring was founded by local teacher Kim Moore, who believes no child should fall through the cracks when it comes to literacy.

Kim started Open Book Tutoring in early 2024 as a one-woman show near the Sandgate Town Hall. Her vision quickly caught on. Within a year, the business grew so much that she moved into a charming 100-year-old building at Shop 2/6 Knox Street — the original electric light shop in Sandgate. Parents and children love the warm, homely learning space, which feels inviting while providing focused, individual attention.

Located next to Sandgate Railway Station and Cypher Café, Open Book Tutoring is perfectly placed for parents on the go. Families often comment on the relaxed atmosphere and the genuine care each child receives.

Kim is an experienced educator, early years specialist, and Sounds Write practitioner who isn’t afraid to question the status quo. She’s passionate about early diagnosis and early intervention for children with learning difficulties. Her catchphrase, “when we know better, we do better,” reflects the ethos behind Open Book Tutoring’s evidence-based approach. Kim is also a Registered SPELD Specialist Teacher, bringing advocacy, expertise, and a deep love of reading to every child and parent she works with.

Evidence-Based Teaching

Open Book Tutoring treats each child as a unique learner. The team doesn’t rely on a cookie-cutter approach. Instead, they tailor programs to each student’s needs, using research-backed resources such as Sounds Write, UFLI Foundations, StepsWeb, Read 3, and Decodable Readers Australia. Following the Science of Reading ensures lasting progress, and the team stays up-to-date with the latest research to inform best teaching practices.

Fun Small Groups

small fun groups

Learning is most effective — and most fun — when it’s social. Open Book Tutoring runs small group sessions to help children build confidence while developing key literacy skills. Lessons follow the Gradual Release of Responsibility framework: I do, we do, you do it together, and you try it alone. This structured, game-based, multisensory approach gives students space to practise and master skills in a relaxed, interactive environment.

Qualified Teachers

Open Book Tutoring’s teachers aren’t just passionate — they are highly qualified. The team includes primary school teachers and high-achieving speech therapy students trained in Structured Synthetic Phonics Programs. Each tutor carefully assesses every child to pinpoint learning gaps and ensure the program aligns with their exact needs. By combining expertise with evidence-based programs, students make measurable progress while building confidence.

Parents interested in arranging a placement assessment and diagnostic report can do so directly through Open Book Tutoring here.

Ongoing Support for Families

Learning doesn’t stop at the end of a session. Open Book Tutoring provides every child with access to a web-based program they can use at home. This game-based tool targets literacy skills, cognitive efficiency, and processing, reinforcing what is taught in sessions and helping prevent “holiday slip.” Research shows children with reading difficulties progress faster with consistent daily practice, and this program ensures learning continues beyond the classroom.

Driven by Purpose

Open Book Tutoring is built on a simple but powerful mission: early diagnosis and effective intervention so no child falls behind. The team helps students gain confidence, discover a love of learning, and achieve measurable results. Parents also gain clarity about their child’s learning profile and pathways forward.

Bookings are based on 10-week school terms, with a minimum of one session per week. While literacy remains the focus, Open Book Tutoring is expanding into early years maths support, school preparation, and school holiday programs.
