Garden fairs and expos everywhere!

October brings an abundance of plant fairs, garden fests and outdoor expos, as well as annual shows of societies including African Violet, Orchid and Begonia.

The Brisbane International Garden Show debuts this year at Pine Rivers Park on 8-11 October. Touted as being Queensland’s answer to the huge Sydney and Melbourne Flower and Garden Shows, this is an exciting addition for all gardening enthusiasts.

These events are a great opportunity to see, smell, learn about and buy some incredible plant varieties and garden products. Bigger shows usually include presenters (often celebrities like Costa Georgiadis of ABC’s Gardening Australia TV show) on a range of topics from growing the plants to delicious ways to eat them! Whether you are a novice gardener, dedicated green thumb, or simply a lover of beautiful flowers, these events make a great day out.

Take notes and photos of your favourites so you can shop for them later if they aren’t available for purchase on the day.

October is a good time to fertilise and mulch and also the last chance to sow a wide range of fruit and vegetables before the summer heat hits. Try tomatoes, eggplants, watermelons, rockmelons, lettuce, beans, rosella, okra and sweetcorn.

Enjoy!
