September is a beautiful time of year in the garden. The mild conditions are delightful for both you and your plants. A large range of vegetables thrive in the warming temperatures, so it’s a great time to get seeds in the ground.
This year, consider sourcing ‘heirloom’ seeds for full-flavour produce without any ‘nasties’. Heirloom varieties are old-fashioned favourites that have been passed down from generation to generation because of their high yields and deliciousness.
Unlike most commercial seeds, heirloom seeds are open-pollinated, natural, non-hybrid, chemical-free, untreated and non-GMO. They are true to type, meaning you can save seed from a plant and expect to get the same thing when you plant the seeds next season – this doesn’t happen with hybrid seeds.

Warmer weather also encourages a proliferation of pests and diseases. The best defence for your plants is to keep them strong and healthy, so keep the organic fertiliser up and provide adequate water.
What to plant now – tomato, eggplant, capsicum and chilli, pumpkin, cucumber, watermelon, rockmelon, sweetcorn, okra, snake beans and rosella.
