The Sandgate Guide has teamed up with an enterprising group of students at Sandgate District State High School (SDSHS) aimed at fostering a love of journalism and engaging with the community.

The school’s journalism club will be contributing articles to the Sandgate Guide throughout the year and the students will be mentored in the process by local journalists.

Year 10 student Abbey had the idea for the club.

“I created the Journalist Club at SDSHS to spotlight the students who love to write and design,” she said.

“The idea was put into action in Term 2, after planning for the duration of Term 1. After the club was approved, as well as further advertising and organising with (teacher) Ms Hartzer, we held our first meeting.

“We have seven members in our group, including myself, who are very excited about using their skills to help the school and providing students at the school a voice.

“This is such an amazing opportunity for the students and I hope it continues to thrive after my graduation.”

Growing Enthusiasm and Future Prospects

Journalism Club members Remy, Miranda, Amelia, Sofia, Eden and Abbey.

Other club members said they hoped to be able to learn how to research current news topics, broaden their multimedia skills and for their voices to be heard on news topics “facing our community.”

School principal Andy Stergou said he was delighted with the student’s initiative.

“It’s a great opportunity and I look forward to seeing how the partnership with the Sandgate Guide develops, and I’m very excited to see this as an extension of the student voice, which is very important to us at Sandgate District State High School,” he said.

The students will be reporting on events and student issues at their school and in the community, as well as offering some opinion pieces on topics that concern them.

Abbey added she hoped the club would grow in numbers as the school year progressed.

“We started with three, now we have seven, and we hope that once we start publishing in the Guide, it will encourage other students to want to join,” she said.

Here at the Sandgate Guide, we hope our readers look forward to the student contributions each month and encourage our young reporters’ ambitions.

The first student piece will appear in the September edition of the Sandgate Guide.
