Celebrating reconciliation and sport

The club’s senior players will proudly wear the bibs this season.

The circular formations on the design comprise five rings and symbolise the resilience and unity of the club. New tune for local star

Sandgate’s own indie-folk artist, Dublin Rose, has released a new single called Ten Thousand Days.

Described as a “luminous and emotionally rich track about holding on as life moves forward”, the song is available now on all streaming platforms.

Dublin, 21, said the song was written in her first year out of high school, and aimed to capture the ache of change, and the fear of drifting apart from people who once meant everything.

“It’s one of my favourite songs I’ve ever written,” she said. “I was scared of growing up and losing people. This song became a comfortable, emotional reflection.”

Dublin Rose

Ten Thousand Days is produced by Yanto Browning, who has worked with artists including Kate Miller-Heidke and The Jungle Giants.

The tune has layers of organic textures and a raw warmth that give it a timeless, emotional pull.

Labor sweeps the poll in historic election

Anika Wells has been re-elected as the Federal Member for Lilley, with 64.4 per cent of the vote on a two-party preferred basis, and a swing of 4.8 per cent towards Labor. The Minister for Sport and Aged Care was part of a sweeping Labor victory at the national poll, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s party taking home 89 seats in the House of Representatives.

Bracken Ridge, which is in the electorate of Petrie, voted in Labor’s Emma Comer, at the expense of long-term Liberal MP, Luke Howarth.

At the time of going to print, the Coalition won just 40 seats, with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton also losing his seat of Dickson, which is to the north of the 4017.

The Greens are expected to have just one seat in the House, while Independents and other minor parties are expected to have 10. Clive Palmer’s Trumpet of Patriots party – which infuriated voters with constant unsolicited text messages – won zero seats.

How to clean mould

If your place is feeling a little green and fuzzy after last month’s weather event, Queensland Health has some tips on eliminating mould. Start by airing out rooms as much as possible, and remember when cleaning mould to wear protective gloves, a mask and goggles.

To clean mould:

  • Avoid using a dry brush as this can spread mould
  • Wash fabric items normally, but if you’re unsure, throw them out
  • Remove carpets that have been waterlogged for two days or more.

A stitch in time

Leah Gay

Brighton artist Leah Gay takes the idea of textures in her paintings to the next level. Inspired by the skills of previous generations in her family who were avid stitchers, sewers and knitters, Leah’s latest collection, Home, features threads right on the canvas.

Using thread from her family collection, Leah spent hours hand embroidering her canvas with embroidery and crochet threads, to explore the idea of home and where we find our stories.

Always open to sharing her techniques, Leah will be showcasing her art in a solo exhibition at Et Al Gallery and Studio in Sandgate from Thursday, 7 November to Sunday, 24 November.

And for those locals wanting to learn more hands-on fashion, you can join Leah for a greeting card workshop on Friday, 8 November. Tickets are available through the Et Al Gallery & Studio website.

Physiotherapist Alana Pacholke, who works in Sandgate, is raising funds to help her get to the World Canoe Polo Championships, being held in China in October.

Alana, 28, has been a member of the Australian women’s team for the past eight years and captained the squad last year at the Oceania Championships.

Canoe Polo is a dynamic team sport, which is played by two teams of five players on a rectangular playing pitch that can be in open water or a swimming pool. Matches are played over two halves of 10 minutes with the aim to score into a goal which is suspended above the water at each end of the pitch.

Alana said she had “paddled all her life” but first began playing seriously 10 years ago.

“This is our first World Championships since Covid with 2020 being cancelled and being unable to travel in 2022 due to Covid restrictions,” she said. “I am hoping to raise at least $5000 to cover travel expenses.”

To donate, go to ASF website.

Not So Fantastic Mr Fox

Keen-eyed locals have spotted a fox roaming around the 4017 after dark in recent weeks, with photos of the animal popping up on Sandgate Facebook pages. According to Brisbane City Council, European red foxes are common in the urban-rural fringe areas as they look for food around rubbish bins, barbeque and picnic areas in parkland and dig in backyard compost heaps. During the day they shelter in thick vegetation along gullies and creek banks, in hollow logs, under houses, in drainpipes and even old car bodies.

Foxes can cause problems for native wildlife and local pets. To report a fox sighting, you can call the council on 3403 8888.
