Community Stories From June 2026
Threads that tie us together
This month, Gallery 4017 will present Threads of Solace, an exhibition of work by Brenda Lui, winner of the 4017 Community Exhibition in 2025. Threads of Solace invites viewers to be swept away by the wind and waves and escape to a tranquil place of peace that is uplifting.
The exhibition explores Brenda’s lived experiences as both a mother and carer to a child with additional needs. Brenda allows herself as a mother to be gently carried away by the wind and waves to a haven where her heart and mind can heal in safety.
Working predominantly with textiles, Brenda has transferred her skills as a milliner and fashion designer across to her arts practice, to visually communicate emotions through movement, line, form, balance, colour and texture.
During the exhibition, Brenda will also be offering a series of workshops. Two will be for adults – the Shell Ribbon Artwork Creative Arts workshop and the Slow Stitch Windswept Creative Arts workshop. There will be three workshops for children in the winter school holidays, called Stitch and Print, Stitch a Picture, and Create a Collage. For more details and to book a place in the workshops, go to Eventbrite.com.au or find the link via www.facebook.com/BrendaLuicreativearts
Threads of Solace opens at Gallery 4017 on Friday, 12 June, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, and closes on Saturday, 4 July. Gallery 4017 can be found at Artrageous Arts, 82-88 Loftus Street, Deagon. Email enquiries@artrageous.org.au for more information.

Rock on Sandgate
Devotees of rock music from the 1960s will be treated to a night of British beats and nostalgia when the chimes ring in the next Rock Under the Clock event this month.
A rock variation of the patriotic anthem Rule Britannia will usher in a cavalcade of hits from famous artists from the 60s era as Jim and The Sonics present ‘Rock Britannia’.
The night will pay tribute to the many recording greats of the time like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Gerry and The Pacemakers, and Herman’s Hermits, as well as Dusty Springfield, Lulu and Petula Clark, plus many more.
Organiser Rod Kippen said the event was now in its twelfth year.
“This has become an institution on the Sandgate entertainment calendar,” he said.
“The event’s popularity has outgrown our traditional venue, the Sandgate Town Hall, and we’ve had to move next door to the Sandgate Senior Citizens Centre, where our dance patrons will welcome the generous dance floor.
“British-themed events have always been a sell-out, so people should book early to avoid disappointment.”

Planning for natural disasters
The Resilient 4017 team and community stakeholders met in March to continue discussions around a Local Disaster Preparedness Plan for the 4017 community. The need for a locally specific disaster plan was identified in a community survey in 2025. During the working group meeting, community stakeholders and local elected representatives provided an overview of the specific needs of the community and the background to previous work and community consultation.
Resilient 4017 spokesperson Zaida Variava said the meeting was “very positive and productive”.
“We’re really excited to get the ball rolling on this plan, as we know how important it will be to the safety and security of our community as we face increased natural disasters over the coming years,” she said.

Up close and personal with Sandgate’s sea creatures
Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the pristine waters of the Sandgate foreshore? One of the best ways to learn about our coastal wildlife is to take part in a free monthly beach walk.
Keep Sandgate Beautiful Association, founded by Laurie Jeays in 1971, promotes and runs the beach walks, with the aim of educating locals and visitors alike about the natural beauty of the 4017 area.
The walks are named “Laurie’s Beach Walk” in honour of Laurie, who began the event in 2006. He died in 2016, aged 79, and was a tireless crusader for the environment throughout his life. In particular, Laurie advocated for the protection of the local foreshore and surrounding wetlands.
The beach walks aim to continue to share his enthusiasm for the environment, his research on the life of the bay, and to keep people informed about the precious ecosystem that is right on our doorstep. Among the many sea creatures spotted during the walks, you can expect to see moon snails, green paddle worms, hermit crabs, shell house worms, and soldier crabs.
The monthly walks are hosted by Keep Sandgate Beautiful Association volunteers, at low tide, and run for close to two hours, with a start time of 9am.
Although the walks are free, bookings are necessary and can be made at humanitix.com/au
For more details, keep an eye on the Keep Sandgate Beautiful Facebook page and website.
The next Laurie’s Beach Walk will be held on Friday, 24 April.

Performance with soul
Sandgate’s St Margaret’s Anglican Church will play host to the Riverbend Ensemble, a collective of professional classical musicians.
Ensemble director and violinist, Helen Carvolth, said the venue had “excellent acoustics and a lot of soul”.
“When you step into St Margaret’s, there is an immediate sense of the passing of time through this place, where people have been gathering for over 100 years,” she said. “We love to play in places like this!”
The concert is titled Contrasts – diverse music for string quartet, and will showcase music by Georg Telemann, Philip Glass, Brisbane composer Rachel Merton and 19th century French composer Charles Gounod.

“Churches like St. Margaret’s have brought communities together for decades,” Helen said. “Our aim is always to bring people together in the enjoyment of music, and St Margaret’s seems like an ideal place for that.”
The concert will be held on Sunday, 1 March at 2pm. Tickets are available online or at the door; pre-booking is strongly advised. Adults $35, concession $30, children under 18 free.
St Margaret’s Anglican Church is on Rainbow Street, Sandgate, next door to Sandgate State School.
Woolies tree update
Deagon Ward Councillor, Jared Cassidy, has provided an update on the trees that were removed from outside Sandgate Woolworths. Posting on his Facebook page, Cr Cassidy said two poinciana trees were removed in October last year.
“I was taken by surprise when they were removed one night, given I had made Council aware of the history of these trees and previous attempts to remove them,” he said.
“The previous compromise was the footpath around the trees being raised to avoid removal.
“I requested that Council explore options other than removal. Unfortunately, I received no further correspondence from Council until the trees were removed.
“Council proposed that two 45L Handroanthus heptaphyllus (Pink Trumpet Trees) would be planted to replace the poincianas. 45L trees are certainly bigger than seedlings but are still quite small and given the need for shade I asked if larger trees could be planted.
“We’re now currently waiting for replacement trees (100L stock trees), which are subject to availability.
“I apologise for the time this has all taken, but I wanted to make sure we get the best outcome.”

Share the Dignity celebrates
Sandgate founder of Share the Dignity, Rochelle Courtney, had some exciting news for supporters of the charity during the Christmas/New Year break.
“I am so proud to share that period products are now recognised as a workplace health and safety consideration in Safe Work Australia’s Code of Practice for Managing the Work Environment and Facilities,” Rochelle posted on LinkedIn.
“This is incredibly important, as our 2024 Bloody Big Survey told us 56.6 per cent of people have missed work due to their period. That fear is stressful, isolating, and preventable.
“Thank you to Safe Work Australia for standing with us.”

The Ladies Who Long Lunch will be hosting their end-of-year celebration at the Full Moon Hotel, and you’re invited. The theme is Summer Sunset Vibes and it’s an unmissable chance to connect with a dynamic group of women and celebrate the past year.
Created three and a half years ago by Kirsty Fields, creative director of Social Ocean, and Jo Stevens, founder of Quirky Habits, the Ladies Who Long Lunch is an organisation dedicated to creating events about women, by women.
It’s for any woman needing friendship and connection, who wants to take time out of their business for themselves, and is looking to make genuine connections in business.
However, Kirsty insists the events are not just for women still active in the work force, or “running an empire”.
“They’re also for women who recognise the importance of self-care, and the social impact of spending time with others who inspire, support, and fill your cup,” she said.
Summer Sunset Vibes will be held at the Full Moon Hotel on Friday, 7 November from 5pm to 8pm. Canapes are provided, as well as a welcome drink on arrival. Dress code is ‘summer chic’.

Community mourns popular baker
Customers of Brighton’s Nathan Street Bakery, and the wider community, were left shocked and saddened last month at the news that baker Kiet Ta had died from a brain haemorrhage.

News of Ta’s death prompted a wave of condolences on local social media pages, with customers and friends sharing stories and remembrances.
Ta is survived by his wife, Huy Nguyen, and their sons, Theo and Sebastian.

The club has been running for 14 years, and is a thriving group of creative, passionate, and diverse crafters.

Anne added that anyone looking for a new hobby was welcome at mosaic club.
“Now if you are looking for an outlet for your creativity, give mosaics a crack,” she said.
“It is very therapeutic, you can get rid of all matter of frustrations, rescue treasured pieces of broken ceramics, and turn it all into beautiful art.
“Our exhibition will showcase some great examples of this.”
The mosaic exhibition opens on 23 September at 2pm at Artrageous and will run for three weeks. You can find the gallery at 82-88 Loftus Street, Deagon.

Book nook for Boondall readers
Boondall residents looking for something to read on the morning commute are being encouraged to stop by the suburb’s newest street library, the Boondall Book Nook.
Located at 169 Normanhurst Road, Boondall, the street library is the perfect place to pick up a book or drop one off.
Creator Chelyce Watson said reading was for everyone.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to have a little community library where you can take a book, leave a book, and share a story,” she said.
“This little free library has been lovingly made by my dad from a casement window from a 1960s farmhouse, a packing crate from John Deere machinery, and lots of little bits and pieces that were ‘going to be useful one day’.
“I’ve always loved the idea of a little library that I can add to, pick from, and share with my neighbours and community.”
For more information, find the Boondall Book Nook on the official street library website.

Rate rises
Brisbane City Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner says residents will pay the “cheapest rates in southeast Queensland” after the announcement of the 2025/2026 Budget.

However, Leader of the Opposition in Council, Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy, said rate rises across the 4017 were going to be a hit to residents’ hip pockets. Rate rises in 4017 suburbs are going up by:
- 5.67 per cent in Boondall
- 6 per cent in Brighton
- 5.45 per cent in Deagon
- 8 per cent in Taigum
- 6 per cent in Zillmere
- 2 per cent in Sandgate

The club’s senior players will proudly wear the bibs this season.
The circular formations on the design comprise five rings and symbolise the resilience and unity of the club. New tune for local star
Sandgate’s own indie-folk artist, Dublin Rose, has released a new single called Ten Thousand Days.
Described as a “luminous and emotionally rich track about holding on as life moves forward”, the song is available now on all streaming platforms.
Dublin, 21, said the song was written in her first year out of high school, and aimed to capture the ache of change, and the fear of drifting apart from people who once meant everything.
“It’s one of my favourite songs I’ve ever written,” she said. “I was scared of growing up and losing people. This song became a comfortable, emotional reflection.”

Ten Thousand Days is produced by Yanto Browning, who has worked with artists including Kate Miller-Heidke and The Jungle Giants.
The tune has layers of organic textures and a raw warmth that give it a timeless, emotional pull.

Bracken Ridge, which is in the electorate of Petrie, voted in Labor’s Emma Comer, at the expense of long-term Liberal MP, Luke Howarth.
At the time of going to print, the Coalition won just 40 seats, with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton also losing his seat of Dickson, which is to the north of the 4017.
The Greens are expected to have just one seat in the House, while Independents and other minor parties are expected to have 10. Clive Palmer’s Trumpet of Patriots party – which infuriated voters with constant unsolicited text messages – won zero seats.
