At Sandgate Guide, we love celebrating local businesses that build stronger people and stronger communities. Ako Martial Arts is one of those places.

Located on Rainbow Street in the heart of Sandgate, Ako Martial Arts is a family-friendly academy offering Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, No Gi, Judo, Wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts. More than just a gym, it is a community built on integrity, resilience and growth.

The word “Ako” comes from Māori culture and means both to teach and to learn. It reflects the belief that learning is reciprocal, that everyone brings something valuable to the mat, and that growth happens together. That philosophy runs through everything they do.

A Community Built on Personal Growth

Founded by Head Instructor Robbie Paraha, a 3rd Degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, and his wife Linzi, Ako was created to share the life lessons martial arts can teach.

For Robbie, martial arts has been transformational. After beginning his journey in kickboxing in New Zealand at 18, he went on to train and compete across Australia and New Zealand in MMA, boxing, kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Along the way he experienced setbacks, tough losses and hard lessons. Each challenge strengthened his resilience and confidence.

That same spirit now shapes the academy. Whether you are stepping onto the mats for the first time or preparing for competition, the focus is not just on technique but also on character development.

Martial arts at Ako connects mind and body through overcoming physical, mental and emotional adversity. Students learn to stay calm under pressure, solve problems in real time and support one another.

Programs for Every Age and Stage

One of the standout features of Ako Martial Arts is its accessibility. Programs are available for children as young as two years old through to adults of all experience levels.

For the youngest members, the Guppies program introduces fundamental movement skills in a playful, supportive environment where parents are involved. As children grow, they progress into Jellyfish and Piranhas classes, which mirror the structure of adult grappling while maintaining an atmosphere of fun and encouragement.

Teen programs continue to build discipline, focus and ethical conduct. Students are encouraged to develop awareness of both their physical and mental health while working towards gradings and competition opportunities.

For adults, classes include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, No Gi, Wrestling, Judo and Mixed Martial Arts. Beginners train alongside more experienced members in a structured and welcoming environment. Coaches break down techniques clearly and ensure everyone feels supported, regardless of fitness level.

Importantly, you do not need to be “fit enough” to start. Many adults walk through the doors feeling intimidated. The team understands that taking the first step is often the hardest part.

That is why beginner-friendly pathways and free trials are available, allowing newcomers to build confidence at their own pace.

A Welcoming Space for Women

Ako also offers dedicated women’s classes led by Linzi, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt and instructor with a background in Early Childhood Education.

Linzi openly shares that she once felt intimidated stepping onto the mats. That experience now shapes the supportive environment she creates for other women. The women’s classes provide a safe, encouraging space for all ages, shapes and experience levels to learn, laugh and grow stronger together.

The academy also runs community-focused women’s self-defence workshops designed to build practical skills and foster empowerment. These initiatives reflect Ako’s commitment to improving not only physical capability but also confidence and security.

Training That Supports Mental Wellbeing

While martial arts is undeniably physical, many members say the mental benefits are just as powerful.

Training requires focus and presence. When you are learning a new technique or working through a sparring round, everyday stress fades into the background. Over time, students develop resilience, patience and a growth mindset.

For children, this often translates into improved concentration at school and stronger social skills. For adults, it can mean reduced stress, increased self-belief and a renewed sense of purpose.

The academy’s culture is one of belonging. New members are welcomed warmly, and long-term friendships are formed on the mats. It is common to see families training together, with parents and children sharing the journey side by side.

Accessible and Community Focused

Classes run six days a week, making it easy to fit training into busy schedules. Whether you are looking to try something new, build confidence in your child or challenge yourself physically and mentally, Ako offers an accessible entry point.

The message from the team is simple. You do not have to be an athlete to begin. You just need the willingness to learn.

If you have ever considered martial arts but felt unsure, this could be your sign to step onto the mats. At Ako Martial Arts, growth happens together, one lesson at a time.
