Canadian fingerstyle guitarist Calum Graham, named one of the World’s Top 30 Guitarists under 30 by Acoustic Guitar Magazine, is set to make his Australian debut.

The first stop on his Phoenix Rising tour is Sandgate, where he will perform at Sandgate Town Hall this month.

Calum said he was looking forward to coming to Australia and interacting with fans after the show.

“I’ll be playing a mix of my most well-known instrumental compositions written for the acoustic guitar along with some new songs from my meditation album, which will be out this fall, as well as a few new songs from my upcoming vocal album,” he said.

“I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to be able to travel and share music with people from all walks of life and it’s always a reminder of the incredible power music has in our world.”

Calum’s career began when he won the Canadian Fingerstyle Competition at 17. Since then, he has garnered international acclaim with ten albums and his original compositions blending folk, world, soul, blues and jazz.

His fingerstyle technique has drawn comparisons to guitar legends like Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, Michael Hedges and Mark Knopfler.

“It’s nice to have received some high praise like that but I feel like I still have so much work to do to really deserve to be taken seriously alongside my heroes,” Calum said. “It is a huge motivation and inspires me to dig deeper and keep writing better and better music by continually improving my craft each day.”

Calum said he found inspiration for his music everywhere but that his greatest inspiration was nature.

“To me, music is sacred and has a medicinal/therapeutic quality to it as well,” he said. “Its ability to help us emotionally in difficult times, to unify us and connect with one another as a universal language is truly astounding to me.

“I’m in the middle of writing music for my vocal album so my antennae is up for inspiration! I can’t wait to bring my guitar to the bayside at Sandgate, explore the area, connect with the people there and see what ideas will result from the experience!”

Tickets are $47 (excluding booking fee). To book, go to Concert Australia.
