Children across the Northside have celebrated their love of reading with Gold Star and Little Star library programs handing out their annual awards.

Deagon Ward Councillor, Jared Cassidy, said presenting the awards was something he looked forward to each year.

“The Gold Star reading program has been running in Council libraries since 2004, with the Little Star program beginning in 2016 and collectively, we’ve seen nearly 130,000 children participate across Brisbane in that time,” he said.

“This is an amazing achievement for our librarians and those families who value reading and writing.

“Early access to literacy doesn’t just boost reading and writing skills later in life, it helps foster more inquisitive minds for lifelong learning.”

The Gold Star program is for children aged six to 12 years and the Little Stars program is for children up to five years of age. Both reading programs are designed to be fun and rewarding.

Celebrating Young Readers and Lifelong Learning

“When you see children from pre-Prep ages all the way up to Grade 6 proudly showing you the list of books they have read, you know how successful this program is at making reading exciting,” Cr Cassidy said.

“I have seen some families every year for almost 10 years at the ceremonies, for them it’s part of their family tradition now.

“Attending the award ceremonies is one of the most rewarding things you get to do as a Councillor, with the excitement amongst the kids and their families shared equally with our library staff who are so proud to do this work.”
