Capes are set to fly as School’s Out on the Green returns with a superhero twist.
With the theme ‘School’s Out, Capes Out!’, the event will take place on Thursday, 2 April at Bracken Ridge Library, hosted by Councillor Sandy Landers, planned by local youth and featuring performances by young musicians.
Cr Landers said that when they held the first event during Youth Week, they were surprised at how big it was and by the request to have another one during the year.
“It really confirmed for me that getting young people involved in the planning was the right way to go,” Cr Landers said. “Our young people have great ideas and they appreciate the opportunity to have a say and have somewhere safe and alcohol free where they can play and listen to music.
“They value that the event gives musicians a chance to showcase their talent for pure enjoyment and is created by their peers who understand what they actually want.”
A spokesperson for the School’s Out on the Green committee said the superhero theme was chosen after a round table discussion where different ideas were explored.
“We wanted a theme people can get into and dress up for, and who doesn’t love a superhero?” the spokesperson said.
Creating Safe Spaces and Opportunities for Young People
They said the event had many benefits for young people, particularly performers who get the opportunity to play their own music in front of their peers.
“It’s a good stepping stone to start performing in front of bigger crowds,” they said. “At our age, it is hard to showcase a garage band and we get to perform live on an actual stage.
“Some of the committee have performed in previous events and are motivated to help organise future events so that other young people have the same opportunity.
“Some of us don’t perform, but we love music and we love having somewhere for our age group to hang out with other young people who live in our area but go to other schools.”
In addition to live music, food trucks will be available with food and drinks catering to a range of dietary requirements.
“This event makes young people feel part of our community and forge friendships outside of their different schools,” Cr Landers said.
“It also shows them that they can make a difference and make Brisbane even better.”
