With spring in the air, it’s time to plant!
But first, ensure you have healthy soil to give your seeds and seedlings the best start.
Lightly dig over the garden beds, incorporating plenty of organic matter such as well-matured garden compost or manure or spent mushroom compost. Then mulch the beds with straw mulch – sugarcane leaf mulch is ideal.
Give your garden bed a week or two to settle down. If you used mushroom compost, be ready to harvest some mushrooms! Water the beds twice a week and apply an organic fertiliser to give your seedlings a boost.
Consider adding colour with some bright flowers – they attract pollinators and beneficial insects to your garden, and some help deter damaging pests. Marigolds are useful in protecting plants, and it’s a good time to plant nasturtiums, snapdragons, petunias and celosia.
