The shift has begun. The temperature has dropped just enough for us Queenslanders to notice, and naturally, we talk about it endlessly. At the same time, there’s excitement in embracing the shift into winter style and dressing for the cooler days and nights.
As a personal stylist, my advice is to look inside your wardrobe FIRST. Do a seasonal wardrobe edit by taking everything out, deciding what needs to be packed away, donated, or sold. Make room for the season ahead!
My golden rule is REMOVE anything that doesn’t make you feel CONFIDENT. If it makes you question yourself, it’s time to go. Keep your favourite staples, i.e. basic tees, dark wash denim jeans, tailored trousers, maxi dresses, midi skirts – these can be transitioned into your winter section. For example, take a maxi dress: add boots and a tailored blazer, or swap in a soft knit, and suddenly you’ve created an outfit you didn’t even know was sitting in your wardrobe.
Building a Functional Winter Wardrobe
Identify the gaps in your wardrobe and fill them with pieces that truly serve you. This might look like investing in a structured jacket – leather or denim – winter boots that work with both pants and dresses, soft neutral scarves, or crossbody bags in winter tones. Anything that adds texture and visual interest deserves a place in your wardrobe. You want outfit formulas that actually work for your life, and a winter wardrobe that feels both elevated and effortless while staying true to your signature style.
Choose three words that capture how you want to feel this winter, and let them guide every wardrobe choice you make. Mine: feminine, edgy, timeless. What are yours?
Do You Have a Signature Style — And Why Does It Matter?
Your signature style is your personal formula – the easy, consistent method behind the way you get dressed each day. It’s more than a favourite outfit or a go‑to colour palette. It’s the visual expression of who you are: your personality, your values, your lifestyle, and the silhouettes that make you feel most confident and comfortable.
Understanding your signature style matters because it becomes part of your identity. It speaks for you before you say a word, communicating your energy and evolving style. It also guides you to shop with intention. When you know the combinations that always work for you, you naturally avoid those impulse purchases that result in unworn, unloved pieces, tags still attached. When your outfit feels aligned with who YOU are, you move through the world with a grounded, effortless presence.
Finding Your Style Anchor and Wearing It With Confidence
Think of your signature style as your secret power. It’s what gives your look character and makes it uniquely yours. It simplifies everything – getting dressed, shopping, packing. It becomes your base, your starting point, and the place you return to when you’re rushed, unsure, or wanting an outfit that feels effortless.
For me, that anchor is denim. Jeans, shirts, skirts, jackets, dresses – denim threads my wardrobe together. If I’m in a hurry, I head straight to that section of my wardrobe and instantly I feel stylish and put together.
And in honour of Mother’s Day, I have to say that my love of denim was inspired by my mum, who wore it with timeless ease. Her denim legacy lives on in me, a thread I wear proudly in my own style story.
