Husband-and-wife duo Sounds of Soul are returning to Sandgate’s Cardigan Bar, bringing their signature vinyl sound back to where it all began seven years ago.
Elaine Brophy explained that she and her husband, Ste, first inquired about a Vinyl Night that Cardigan Bar was hosting back in 2018, with the venue immediately asking if they would be interested in playing a gig.
“The manager asked how many records we had and what style of music we played,” she said. “The answer was ‘a lot and Northern Soul.’”
The duo is excited to return to Cardigan Bar on Saturday, 23 May to deliver an eclectic mix of high-energy vinyl and soulful classics.
Elaine explained that Northern Soul was a nightclub-based movement that developed in Northern England from the late 1960s, centred around a certain style of black American soul music with a heavy beat and fast tempo.
“It is also associated with particular dance styles and fashions,” she said. “The Northern Soul movement became famous for its passionate dancers, rare records, and all-night dance culture.”
A Night of Vinyl, Dance, and Soulful Energy
While many Northern Soul dancers have been skillfully spinning and gliding across the dance floor since the 1970s, Elaine said they are just glad to see people getting out and enjoying the music.
“We are happy to see people dancing whichever way they like – even if they have never heard these tunes before,” she said. “That is the spirit of soul, a friendly, happy crowd having fun to the music. We like to get involved too and often dance with them when we are taking turns spinning the decks.”
The duo’s ‘Soul Groove’ event will feature an eclectic mix of 60s R&B, funk, Latin, and jazz, as well as Northern Soul.
“We love playing in smaller venues, as we like the intimacy and they are usually pretty cool spots as well,” Elaine said. “Playing at the Cardigan Bar will seem like a bit of a homecoming for us – we’re looking forward to catching up with our friends and some of our regulars from back in the day and having a fun night with everyone.”
The event is free. For more information, find Sounds of Soul Brisbane on Facebook.
