An exploration of colour, form and feeling will take centre stage as a local artist unveils his first solo exhibition this month.

Gallery 4017 will present ‘Discovery,’ the first solo exhibition by Brisbane-based contemporary artist Mike McCarthy, opening Friday, 8 May at 6.30pm and running through to 6 June.

Mike, who has been painting for nearly 12 years, works primarily in acrylic on canvas, focusing on still life compositions that explore the interplay of shape, colour, light and shadow. His works depict everyday objects arranged with deliberate structure, aiming to prompt emotional responses and personal interpretation from viewers.

While best known for still life, Mike has also explored landscape and portrait painting. His style has been described as grounded in realism, with more recent influences from Art Deco and Pop Art. He cites Australian artists Jeffrey Smart and Margaret Olley among his key inspirations, alongside European masters such as Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas and J.M.W. Turner.

From Still Life to Solo Spotlight: An Artist’s Journey

Despite having no formal qualifications, Mike has developed his practice through workshops and mentorship under Artrageous Artist-in-Residence, Shane Rodwell, gaining experience in colour theory, chiaroscuro and perspective.

His recent achievements include People’s Choice Awards at the Artrageous exhibitions in 2023 and 2024, as well as a highly commended placing with the Redcliffe Art Society. He has also exhibited in the Nundah Art Shows and contributed to the Deagon Railway Station mural project.
