A new chapter is unfolding in Sandgate Village as the much-loved Arthouse Northside brings its creative spirit to the heart of the 4017 community.

Established in Deagon in 1997, the shop remained a fixture on Braun Street for nearly three decades before relocating to Fifth Avenue in Sandgate under current owners Leah and Fraser Gordon.

“We love feeling like part of the Sandgate Village,” Leah said. “The new location should work wonderfully for our customers.”

The couple acquired the store in 2020 from longtime owner Kevan Buckle, who established the business as a trusted destination for artists of all levels seeking quality materials, expert advice, and custom framing.

“Kevan owned the shop until April 2020 when Fraser and I purchased it – the week the world shut down with COVID-19,” Leah said. “I had been a customer of the business for a few years prior to the purchase and saw an opportunity to grow the business offerings.”

Fraser added that although Kevan no longer owned the shop, he continued on to help with the transition.

“He stayed on with us, working and guiding us through many of the intricacies and technicalities of the framing business,” Fraser said. “He finally spread his wings in the last year or so, but his help, expertise and guidance has put us in good stead to help our customers with almost any framing-related task.”

A Creative Hub Finds Its Place in Sandgate Village

With Leah’s experience as an artist and Fraser’s eye for detail, the couple have continued to nurture the store as a welcoming hub for creatives of all skill levels. The move to Fifth Avenue had been something they had considered for quite some time before finding the perfect spot that suited both their customers and their family.

“We sought to find a new home for the business that would cement its place in the Sandgate landscape as much as Russell’s Fabrics or Jeay’s Hardware has done,” Leah said. “Being on Fifth Avenue right next door to Et Al Gallery and Studio allows our two businesses to complement and support each other. Ultimately, this also means we can do more to support artists in our community.”
