Local audiences are in for a treat this month with a morning of classical favourites, operatic highlights and contemporary crossover music from acclaimed tenor Roger Davy and soprano Gabrielle Jack.
Timeless Duets: From Paris to Popera will be held on Friday, 29 May at Sandgate Town Hall, presented by Vavachi Entertainment.
Gabrielle said she and Roger planned the concert repertoire over a “cuppa”, noting down all the songs people had asked them to perform.
“The songs that made them feel something so strongly that they wanted to share with us how it made them feel – by writing to us or in person after a show,” she said. “We then added in some personal favourites of ours that we have been dying to put in a show, and voila – a program packed full of absolute musical gems.”
Roger, former star of The Ten Tenors, said the concert would take audiences on a journey, balancing well-loved classics with moments of surprise and contrast.
“Audience connection is key, so we’ve included recognisable songs alongside more theatrical and virtuosic selections to keep the program engaging, varied and emotionally rewarding from start to finish,” he said.
The repertoire includes La Vie en Rose, Perfect Symphony, Love Changes Everything, Unchained Melody, If I Loved You, That’s Amore, and music from The Phantom of the Opera.
A Musical Journey Blending Classics and Contemporary
Gabrielle said one highlight would be performing Vivo per Lei as part of a tribute to Andrea Bocelli.
“Roger and I went to see Andrea Bocelli perform in Sydney last year and we heard Bocelli perform it with a gorgeous Australian singer…Amy Manford – and we both looked at each other at the same time and said, ‘We need to do this!’” she said.
For Roger, The Prayer is always a highlight.
“It beautifully bridges the classical and contemporary worlds, and audiences really connect with its emotion and familiarity – it’s a true ‘goosebumps’ moment,” he said.
They will be accompanied by pianist Leanne Warne and tenor Matthew Leigh, whose presence, Roger said, “allows for richer harmonies, thrilling trio moments and greater musical variety.”
Both Roger and Gabrielle said they hoped the evening would leave a lasting impression on the audience.
“More than anything, we hope they leave feeling connected – to the music, to each other, and to the joy of live performance, especially now, in these difficult times,” Roger said.
Gabrielle added, “I hope that they will feel nourished of soul, warm of heart and whatever else they need to feel – music does different things to all of us – that is the beauty of it.”
