Brisbane City Council has announced a major upgrade of the Brighton foreshore parklands, set to transform the public spaces along Flinders Avenue, between 12th and 19th Avenues.
The final project plan will deliver new shaded picnic areas with barbecues, more seating and shelters, bike racks and drinking fountains, more accessible parking, and more native plants and refreshed lawns.
Deagon Ward Councillor, Jared Cassidy, said he was pleased to see the works finally going ahead.
“After 15 years of waiting since the project was put on hold by the Lord Mayor, we are seeing progress on the Brighton Foreshore upgrade,” he said.
The Federal Government provided $5,000,000 to support delivery of this project under the Priority Community Infrastructure Program, with the advocacy of the Federal Member for Lilley, Anika Wells.
Beach access will also be improved with a new accessible ramp and wash-off areas, while the public toilets at 19th Avenue will be upgraded to include an accessible change room.
The works complement upgrades delivered in January, including the installation of three new picnic benches and native plants, chosen to specifically suit the conditions of the foreshore.
Community Expectations and Future Improvements
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said Council wanted to make it easier for people to “get outdoors and enjoy our beautiful bayside”.
“These upgrades will make Brighton Foreshore Parklands an even better spot to relax by the water, go for a picnic, ride a bike or catch up with family and friends,” he said.
Cr Cassidy added the works were due to be completed by December this year.
“If locals are interested in seeing a breakdown of the project, I encourage you to visit the Brighton Foreshore Parklands project page on Council’s website,” he said.
“While it’s great to see this progress, the community is understandably disappointed that widening the last sections of old paths are not part of this upgrade.
“This is something I’ve requested in my Budget submission to the Lord Mayor, which will be handed down next month.
“As we move further into the year, I will continue to provide updates to everyone in the community.”
Cr Cassidy added that in the wake of the additional Council funding being spent on the Wynnum foreshore, he would also like to see further funding for improvements in Brighton.
Construction will be closely managed to ensure residents can still enjoy the foreshore while the works take place.
