A new campaign outlining a long-term vision for Sandgate’s CBD has been unveiled as planning discussions for one of Brisbane’s most beloved bayside suburbs begin to take shape.
The Sandgate Bayside Chamber of Commerce has introduced Activate! Sandgate!, a community-led initiative aimed at revitalising the suburb while retaining its unique charm. The campaign proposes a mix of improvements to public spaces and opportunities for future development, with a focus on balancing growth with heritage preservation.
Chamber president Bill Gollan said the campaign was designed to ensure Sandgate remained well-positioned for the future as Brisbane continues to grow.
“Sandgate is one of Brisbane’s most naturally beautiful bayside locations, but without thoughtful future planning, we risk falling behind and losing the unique character that makes Sandgate so special,” he said. “Activate! Sandgate! is about working with the community to deliver a balanced decision, one that protects our heritage, while creating new opportunities for locals to live, work and invest in the area.”
Balancing Growth, Community Input, and Heritage in Sandgate’s Future
The vision includes major upgrades to Einbunpin Lagoon and surrounding parklands, alongside a renewed mixed-use CBD precinct. It aims to support local businesses, attract investment, and deliver more diverse housing and employment opportunities – creating a vibrant and sustainable community while maintaining the suburb’s established streetscapes.
The campaign comes as Brisbane City Council prepares to consult on Sandgate’s future as part of its Suburban Renewal Precinct program, which focuses on transforming key suburban areas into more connected, liveable communities.
According to the chamber, a key priority is encouraging early community input ahead of the Council’s formal consultation period – expected to begin in mid-2026.
“We know there is strong demand for more diverse housing options, better local employment opportunities and improved community facilities,” Bill said. “This campaign is about making sure those needs are clearly heard as part of the planning process.”
The campaign launch brings ongoing discussion within the community, with some residents expressing interest in improved amenities and economic opportunities, while others have raised concerns about potential impacts on Sandgate’s natural environment and relaxed village atmosphere.
In the months ahead, residents, businesses and stakeholders will have further opportunities to help shape a town centre that protects the community’s identity while supporting Sandgate’s future growth.
