Sandgate is gearing up for a rocking good time at the sixth annual Youth Festival.

This year brings even more of a festival vibe, with food trucks and market stalls alongside an impressive roster of local talent competing to be the best.

Festival sponsor, Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy, said this year’s event was going to be bigger and better than ever.

“From very humble beginnings in our first year, we have seen growing crowds, more performers and more interest from the community in supporting young artists,” he said.

“We have attracted judges from across the music industry, and their support has made this festival a real highlight for young musicians and performers wanting to get recognised.

“This year, I have partnered with event management company Good Times Events Co to change things up a bit.  There will be more food stalls, market stalls and community representation from Jabiru and Head Space.

“And there will be more of an upbeat, fun vibe with the addition of a dance floor.”

Celebrating Youth Talent and Launching Local Music Careers

Cr Cassidy added previous winners of the festival had gone on to further success.

“Our first winner, TEN12, released an EP, which they toured promoting it at various venues across the country,” he said.

“They also made 4ZZZ radio’s Hot 100 list. Other competitors have won large Brisbane-wide popular vote music competitions.

“We have also seen others continue their music journey at venues around Brisbane, writing and performing their own music.”

Bands and soloists are welcome to audition for the festival, and they are judged on a range of factors, including skill and stage presence.

The winner receives $1000 courtesy of State Member for Sandgate Bisma Asif, Federal Member for Lilley, Anika Wells, Kuhn Corp Print and Packing, and Cr Cassidy, as well as a trophy and their name on the perpetual trophy.

“I was shocked from the very first year how many talented musicians and artists we had in our local community that were at local schools, performing and, in many cases, writing music, but rarely given an opportunity to play for a large crowd at an event,” Cr Cassidy said.

“I am really proud of the talent we have in our community and proud of the event we have created to showcase that. I am sure we will all be blown away again this year.”
