The 4017 community has a rich history of poetry, with locals gathering for more than 20 years to share their love of the spoken word.
The group now known as Poets by the Bay is looking forward to sharing that love with the wider community, with an upcoming display of local poets at the Sandgate Library.
Poets by the Bay convenor, Julie O’Neill, said the group was open to everyone.
“Bush poetry has a strong association of the group, with many award-winning poets gracing the local stage over the years,” Julie said.
“The group also has a strong association with the Brotherhood of the Wordless, donating the proceeds from the sale of their early publication, Images of Bramble Bay, to help get the group going.
“The group continues to evolve and is always looking for new members.”
Spreading word, inspiring the locals
Julie added the display of books by past and present members would hopefully inspire Sandgate locals to dive into the world of poetry.
“We gather on the third Thursday of every month at the Brighton Hotel where the welcome is warm and wizards of the word weave wonderfully wise, wacky, and witty poems,” she said.
“Everyone is encouraged to contribute, and you can read a poem from an author you love, recite one of your own poems, or simply sit back and listen.”
Search Facebook for Poets by the Bay for more information and to keep up with the latest announcements, including the date for the library display.
POETS BY THE BAY
By Julie O’NeillThere’s a little pub on the hill that’s stood the test of time where poets meet once a month and share their love of rhyme.
If you’re passing by, please don’t be shy a seat awaits for you,
for in those walls you’ll find a space for words buried deep within you.
Will your voice tremble with fear or will laughter flood the room?
Will you recite the words of others or share a joke or two?
Will you trust the room with your own words and speak vulnerably
giving all who await the gift of true authenticity?
Or will you sit quietly and speak only with your eyes, as tears roll down your cheeks with feelings you can’t describe?
For in that little pub is more than rhyming verse there’s a family of locals who’ll hang off your every word.
