Following the success of their Timeless Duets concert at Sandgate Town Hall in April earlier this year, Vavachi Entertainment is returning with a new production, The Two Tenors – The Best of Josh Groban as part of Queensland Seniors Month.
The production is set to take place early next month and features former The Ten Tenors member Roger Davy, Gold Palm Award-winning musical theatre performer Matthew Leigh, and special guest soprano Gabrielle Diaz from Opera Queensland and The 7 Sopranos.
For Brighton local Matthew, the performance will be something of a homecoming.
“I have strong memories as a child of seeing the colonies of bats flying across the evening sky from my aunty’s house in Sandgate and always loving the summer heat (although not so much now),” he said.
“I have become extremely grateful for opportunities to perform locally, and Sandgate Town Hall is such a lovely venue to do so.”
A Passion for Music
Matthew’s passion for performing began in childhood, with his parents encouraging his musical ambitions.
“From a young age I was singing and performing on the stage locally, until at age nine I was lucky enough to perform as lead in an Opera in Toowoomba,” he said.
He later joined the Voice of Birralee choir in Brisbane, before undertaking musical theatre studies in Sydney as an adult and building a career in performing. After returning to Brisbane, Matthew has continued to perform with community musical theatre companies and in professional productions.
Now, he is back and ready to bring his lifelong experience to the local stage.
“I’m excited to give the crowd a chance to experience the soaring power and emotional depth from Josh Groban’s repertoire, especially with the great acoustics at this venue,” he said.
Audiences can expect 90 minutes of Josh Groban favourites, including You Raise Me Up, The Prayer, To Where You Are and Bridge Over Troubled Water, alongside Broadway, classical crossover and timeless favourites.
Roger said Gabrielle Diaz from Opera Queensland and The 7 Sopranos would add another incredible dimension to the show.
“When the three of us come together, those harmonies can be quite spectacular,” he said.
He said he was hopeful the performance would leave a lasting impression on the local audience.
“We want people to laugh, perhaps shed a tear, sing along and leave feeling uplifted,” Roger said. “Having Matthew return to perform in his hometown makes this performance particularly meaningful.”
