For many of us, screens have become part of everyday life. Whether it’s checking emails, scrolling social media or watching just one more episode, it can be difficult to switch off.
A digital detox doesn’t mean abandoning technology completely. Instead, it’s about taking regular breaks from screens and reconnecting with the world around us.
In the Sandgate area, there are plenty of opportunities to disconnect.
One of the simplest ways is to head outdoors. The Sandgate and Shorncliffe foreshore is ideal for a phone-free stroll. Leave your earbuds at home and listen to the sound of the waves and seabirds. Walking at sunrise or sunset can be especially relaxing.
Families can turn a digital detox into an adventure. Pack a picnic and explore the tidal flats. Don’t forget to take some binoculars so you can look out for wildlife.
Younger children will enjoy Einbunpin Lagoon playgrounds, while older kids can cycle or scoot along the waterfront paths. The rule is simple: phones stay in bags unless needed for emergencies.
Finding Calm in Nature and Community
Nature is an antidote to screen fatigue. Nearby Boondall Wetlands offers walking and cycling tracks where visitors can slow down and appreciate the natural environment. Noticing birds, plants, insects and the changing seasons encourages mindfulness.
You don’t need to go outside to enjoy a digital detox. You can unpack a board game, start a jigsaw puzzle or meet a friend for coffee. Sandgate Library offers a quiet place to read or take part in craft activities.
For those who enjoy hands-on creativity, Alannah May’d Paper & Crafty Creations (paperandcrafty.com) in Bracken Ridge offers intimate paper crafting workshops designed to inspire makers of all skill levels.
If you prefer something more active, Sandgate Parkrun is a great way to start the weekend outdoors. Running or walking the foreshore is a free and social way to enjoy fresh air and exercise, and you can also volunteer or spectate. It runs every Saturday at 7am (www.parkrun.com.au/sandgate).
For older residents, reducing screen time can create space for gardening, joining local writing groups or photography meetups, or other activities that support wellbeing, creativity and connection.
The key is to start small. Try an hour each day, a screen-free Sunday morning or keeping devices away from the dinner table. You may be surprised how refreshing it feels to reconnect with your community, family and surroundings.
Even small breaks can make a noticeable difference to your wellbeing and focus.
