St Patrick’s College Shorncliffe has submitted plans for a new three-storey sports, science and innovation centre, replacing the existing two-storey Callan Centre on the corner of Pier Avenue and Yundah Street.
The proposed development would feature 4,631 square metres of educational facilities, including two indoor basketball courts with spectator seating, an entry foyer, landscaped arrival space, kiosk, learning areas, and sports storage.
Level one would include a gymnasium, sports administration offices, learning spaces, allied health clinician rooms, staff facilities and amenities, while a rooftop level would include outdoor sports courts, a rock-climbing wall, storage, and a kiosk.
A basement level would provide 82 car parks, bicycle storage and service areas, while landscaping and streetscape improvements are also proposed.
Residents Raise Concerns Over Proposal
The application has attracted some objections from residents, who have raised concerns about the building’s height and scale, as well as implications for traffic congestion, parking, pedestrian safety, and noise, and its impact on Shorncliffe’s “heritage character”. One submission supported the underground car park but called for changes to the building’s design and stronger traffic management measures.
The proposal is being assessed as an extension to the existing educational facilities. Submitted in June this year, the application remains under assessment by Council.
The Sandgate Guide contacted St Patrick’s College for comment, but they did not return messages prior to publication deadline.
