The Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) Sandgate Branch is set to celebrate 100 years since the formation of the original Sandgate branch with a fundraising fashion parade and morning tea.
The event will be held at the Sandgate Town Hall on Tuesday, 15 September.
QCWA Subcommittee member Anne Jenkins said attendees could expect a warm welcome, a delicious morning tea, and a colourful parade of Australian-made clothing and accessories from Brisbane-based retailer Portofino Fashions.
“A morning of fun, friendship and fashion!” she said.
The event also pays tribute to the women who established Sandgate’s first QCWA Branch in 1926. Formed from a ‘Circle of Women,’ the original branch supported Linga Longa on Flinders Parade, providing holiday accommodation for disadvantaged rural women and children while raising funds for community projects and disaster relief.
From its establishment in 1926 until its closure in 2003, the original Sandgate Branch played an active role in fundraising for rural communities, supporting the war effort, and helping local families during times of disaster, including the 1980 hailstorm that damaged thousands of homes across Brighton and Bracken Ridge.
Supporting Communities Through a Century of Service
“The Sandgate branch members felt this would be a tribute to those founding members and all the women who have served in the branch over the decades, celebrating their achievements as a community organisation and their willingness to embrace change and stand together,” Anne said.
Funds raised from the fashion parade will support the QCWA State Rural Crisis Fund, assisting rural Queensland communities recovering from recent flooding, while also helping provide hygiene kits for people experiencing domestic crises locally. The branch also supports disadvantaged schools throughout the Pacific Islands with educational materials.
Anne encouraged community members to come along, enjoy the morning and discover what the QCWA is all about.
“Come and join a group of friendly women at QCWA Sandgate with an aim to support both our local and wider communities,” she said.
“Expect fun and friendship whilst giving something back to the local community and communities across Queensland.”
