Anyone who loves good old-fashioned blues should head to the Cardigan Bar in Sandgate this month.
Mr Moondog Blues is a New Zealand-born blues/roots musician who regularly tours the east coast of Australia. He said the Cardigan Bar was always a “must-play” venue.
“It’s a great vibe there, one of those venues where you get to play what you want, you just do your thing and I love that,” Moondog said.
“It’s getting harder to find live music venues, but the Cardi Bar is one of those places I just love coming back to.”
Moondog’s style of music is described as a blend of “traditional blues, rock ‘ n ‘ roll, voodoo-infused mojo-juju blues-a-billy”.
“I love simple blues, but mine is a bit more rockabilly, so I came up with the term blues-a-billy,” he said.
His shows have been described as “possessed, heartfelt and real”, able to sustain bluesy vibes all night or deliver punchy festival sets.
A Night of Live Blues and Homemade Guitars
Moondog has been releasing music since the 1970s and has recorded eight albums. His Cardigan Bar show will also feature Australian drummer Scott Burke, as well as Moondog’s performance on his signature, homemade biscuit-tin guitars.
“I have some great drummers I perform with, and this two-piece band we have planned for Brisbane sounds really full,” Moondog said.
Moondog’s latest solo effort, Take A Bow, was released in early 2023 and was self-recorded in Punakaiki, New Zealand, for that one-man-band feel. This year, he also released 6:36, a 15-track album recorded at Anzac Studio, Whangarei, New Zealand.
He added he was hoping to see as many locals as possible at the Cardigan Bar gig on 14 August.
“Get away from that screen for a little while, get to the show and have a good time – I promise you’ll enjoy it,” Moondog said.
“People who know, know. Live music is the best. Come on out and have an adventure.”
