Everybody Needs Good Neighbours

New residents to the 4017 are being invited to an event aimed at getting to know the people in your neighbourhood.

SANDBAG community centre is hosting the event this month, which will feature local clubs, groups, and state and council politicians.

Community partnerships worker, Jocelyn Harrison, said the event came about after ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred barrelled through the area last year.

“We hosted a community debrief with local politicians and organisations and one theme was that people who had moved here didn’t know they were in a flood zone,” she said.

“A lot of people don’t know their neighbours, and this also came out after the 2022 floods, that some people had no one and their neighbours didn’t realise.

“And that’s what we found in the aftermath of that, that some people don’t have help.”

The welcome event will focus on community groups and information, rather than support services.

“We are a neighbourhood centre, so it’s our responsibility to respond to people’s concerns and their hopes, and we hope we’re doing that with this event,” Jocelyn said.

Connecting New Residents with the Community

“If you’re new here, you’re not in the loop about things like the Repair Café, which runs here once a month.

“There will be local social groups joining us on the day, environmental groups, music clubs and groups, and Resilient 4017 will be here as well.

“It’s a chance for people to come here and see what’s on offer in our community.”

Jocelyn added that families moving here from other countries, or even interstate, had another layer of complexity and isolation to deal with.

“We have a lot of wonderful local groups here, local volunteers, and we want to draw from that pool of knowledge,” she said.

Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy will be attending, alongside State MP for Sandgate, Bisma Asif.

“Bisma is using the new electoral roll data to help us target this event to new residents, and on the day, we will have a barbecue and kids’ activities,” Jocelyn said.

“Hopefully this will become an annual event, and we hope that it’s something people will find valuable.”
