Jason’s Quality Meats, a family-owned butcher shop in Brighton, has claimed two first-place awards at the Queensland Retail Butchery Industry State Gala Dinner.
The event, hosted by the Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC) in October, saw the business take top honours in both the Best Traditional Beef Sausage and Best Gourmet Sausages categories.
Owner Jason Andrews said words couldn’t describe the feeling when Jason’s Quality’s Meats was announced as the winner in the Gourmet Sausage category for their sweet orange beef sausages.
“I was speechless as the whole table and room roared with excitement,” Jason said. “Walking back to the table after accepting our award, trophy in hand, I could see the look of excitement and pride on the face of my father and both of my sisters.
“It was a complete honour to have the head judge of Sausage King tell me in front of my fathers and sisters that the sweet orange beef sausage is by far the best he’s ever tasted in his whole life.
“This is a man who has cooked for the king and queen, Parliament House and travelled the world for 30-plus years judging food.”
He said just as the excitement from the first win was settling, Jason’s Quality Meats was again called to the stage – this time in the coveted Traditional Beef Sausage category for their Australian country beef sausages.
“I’m still pinching myself and trying to process everything that just happened,” Jason said, reflecting on the evening.
These latest wins add to an already impressive collection of awards for the business, including three first-place awards, two second-place awards and three third-place awards in the regional AMIC Sausage King and Best Butchers Burger Competition a few weeks earlier.
“What makes our achievements so remarkable this year is the fact we were up against a much larger area and more than twice the amount of butchers than ever before,” Jason said.
“Not only has our region on Brisbane northside been expanded to more than double, every year our competitors raise the bar and try a little harder.”
On to the Nationals: Aiming for the Crown
The recent wins bring Jason’s Quality Meats’ overall tally to 16 first-place awards and 45 awards in the past seven years.
The business now qualifies for the AMIC Sausage King and Best Butchers’ Burger National Final Competition, to be held in Tasmania in February.
“It’s been a dream of mine to one day win the big one and have the title as Australian Sausage King,” Jason said. “Fingers crossed this year is our year.”
