Lawn bowls is one of the most iconic sports in Australia, and Brighton Bowls Club has been serving the local 4017 community for over seven decades.
Jack Stevens, Deputy Chair at the club, explained that while they have had a lot to be proud of over the years, this September will see their biggest celebration yet.
“We will be marking our 75th anniversary events with a ten-day long celebration,” he said. “Special events and entertainment will be happening throughout the whole period.”
The Brighton Bowls Club dates back to 1950, with both the men’s and women’s divisions having been established that year. More recently, however, the club voted to become open so that men and women play against one another, negating the need for two separate divisions.
Jack explained that the club has celebrated many great players over the years with pennant wins across varying divisions for both men and women throughout the club’s history.
Although the club has seen some great success, Jack said that like many other sporting clubs during COVID, membership took a hit.
“We had dropped down to just 30 bowling members,” he said. “Thankfully, we are now back up to 93 with an additional 250 social members.”
With membership on the rise, and having recently been awarded Club Of The Year by the Moreton Bay District Bowls Association in 2023, Brighton Bowls will have plenty to celebrate when anniversary festivities kick off on Friday, 19 September.
75th Anniversary Event Schedule
“Matches will start off with an Open Self-Selected Pairs event at 2:30 pm on Friday, followed by a Rapid Fire Triples event at noon on Saturday,” Jack said. “The kitchen will also be open all weekend with entertainment from 6pm on both Friday and Saturday evenings.”
Throughout the following week, there will be Veteran Fours on Monday morning and Open Pairs on Wednesday afternoon.
“On Friday, 26 September, we will once again have Self-Selected Open Pairs,” Jack said. “The celebrations will wrap up with the Barracuda Classic on Saturday and Sunday, and Karaoke Kapers on Saturday evening.”
Guests can come along to enjoy the beautiful bay breezes and laidback hospitality while helping to support the club as they celebrate this major milestone.
