Uniting Church Celebrates 30 Years of Christmas Lights 

The Sandgate Uniting Church is inviting the local community to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its much-loved Christmas lights display. 

The Community Christmas Lights will shine from 6 December, accompanied by festive activities designed to bring joy and meaning to the holiday season. 

Pastor Margaret Niethe said this year marked a special milestone.  

“It is a community tradition and Sandgate Uniting Church has had the privilege of bringing Jesus to this community for all of these 30 years,” she said.  

Alongside the lights, the church will host a Christmas Market from 13 to 21 December, open from 6pm to 9pm. Visitors can browse craft, jams, chutneys and confectionery stalls, and enjoy a BBQ dinner.  

Inside the chapel, the Prayer Tree will return. Attendees can write prayers on provided cards, which will be prayed over during the Christmas Eve service. 

Margaret said the Prayer Tree had a special place in the hearts of locals. 

“A comment to me was made by a young woman who shared her story of coming to the Christmas Lights,” she said. “She first came with her grandmother when she was three years old and has come every year to put a prayer on the tree, and the year she spoke to me, she shared that that year, she was sharing her experience with her fiance. So, the tradition goes on.”
