The Sandgate Uniting Church is set to light up the holiday season once again with its popular Christmas Lights display.

The lights will be switched on at 7pm on Friday, 6 December and will shine brightly every evening from 6pm to 10pm until Christmas Day.

Christmas Lights Coordinator Paul Fletcher said this year’s display featured the theme of ‘Peace’.

“In a world where there is so much turmoil, we want people to know that peace is available for those who seek it,” Paul said. “John 14:27 says, ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.’ We believe Jesus is the one who can bring peace to those who seek it.”

Music, Markets, and Festive Fun for the Whole Family

In addition to the light display, visitors can enjoy a variety of live music performances from 14 December to 21 December. Each evening, from 6pm to 9pm, a different band or choir will perform, including:

  • Saturday, 14 December: Second Wind Concert Band
  • Sunday, 15 December: Christmas Carol Service with Rev Garry
  • Monday, 16 December: Ormiston Heritage Pipes and Drums
  • Tuesday, 17 December: Bayside Divas
  • Wednesday, 18 December: Bel Canto Singers
  • Thursday, 19 December: Special Christmas Carol Singing
  • Friday, 20 December: New Groove Jazz Ensemble
  • Saturday, 21 December – Soundwaves

The church will also host market stalls selling crafts, jams, plants, bric-a-brac, donuts and coffee, along with a sausage sizzle. The church’s new op shop, Second Blessings, will be open throughout the week.

For the children, there will be a free craft activity and a scavenger hunt to add to the festive fun.

Paul said the annual event was an opportunity to bring some joy to the community and share the Christian message of Christmas.

“We have found over the years that people comment that each year they look forward to coming to our lights display,” he said. “As soon as we turn them on, we have cars pulling up to look at the display.

“Many of those who attend came as children themselves and now bring their own children. It has become a family tradition to attend the lights display for many families.”

The church has been hosting its Christmas Lights display since 1995 and will celebrate 30 years of the tradition next year.
