Sandgate residents, young and old, are getting ready to sing their way into the festive season, with the annual Carols by the Bay.
Students from Sandgate, Boondall, Brighton and Nashville state schools will perform at the event at Einbunpin Lagoon Park on 4 December, alongside the Multitude Community Choir and the Bayside Divas.
Deagon Ward Councillor, Jared Cassidy, said the event seemed to grow in popularity each year.
“Carols by the Bay has such a long history, dating back in some form to at least the early 1990s,” he said.
“We’ve seen crowds get bigger each year and this carols event has become a real community favourite. Having local schools come together and sing as one big choir is quite unique too.
“Here on the Northside, there is no shortage of community celebrations and gatherings, but this one, headlined by our schools’ choir, is really special. You can’t wipe the smiles from their faces all night.”
Christmas Cheer, Music, and Memories
There will be a variety of tasty treats on offer, including ice-cream and snow cone stalls, a fundraising barbecue, and the Lions Club will be selling their traditional Christmas cakes.
“We will have glowsticks for the kids and we hope to see everyone dressed in their Christmas best to welcome Santa at the end of the night,” Cr Cassidy said.
He added that the carols event was one of his favourites.
“Having been involved in Carols by the Bay as a student performing in the 1990s to now for the past 10 years as councillor, I have really fond memories of each and every one,” Cr Cassidy said.
“There are kids I performed with at school who are now bringing their families along to perform in the choir.
“Some of the students who performed in my first year as a councillor hosting this event would be through high school and university or TAFE now, and meeting them out in the community is special.
“It may not seem like it to the students, or their families watching along, but the memories you create for yourself are also ones you’re creating for the community, as these events evolve and grow and take on new meaning for new people.”
Performers will sing a mix of Christmas classics and some more modern festive tunes. Songbooks will be provided on the night, so families can sing along.
