The South East Queensland Symphonic Winds (SEQSW) is ending the year with a performance celebrating the talent of Australian music.

Premiering at Sandgate Town Hall on Saturday, 21 November, the group will perform Australian at Heart – a program made up entirely of Australian composers.

SEQSW Assistant Conductor and Bracken Ridge local, Ash Stiller, said that audiences could expect a lot of variety on the night of the performance.

“We have a bunch of different genres as well as some never-heard-before originals,” Ash said.

“I’ll be conducting ‘Huntsman in the Car’ by Fran Griffin, and ‘Kintsugi’ by Adele ‘Alex’ Mitchell. Kintsugi is an original written by our band and will be premiered along with a few other pieces!

“These two alone are a great example of variety in the concert. ‘Huntsman in the Car’ is a comical and adventurous piece, while ‘Kintsugi’ is lovely and deeply emotive.”

Some other pieces featured on the program include ‘Bushdance’ by Ralph Hultgren, ‘The Butterfly (Roars)’ by Claire Petherick, ‘Colonial Song’ by Percy Grainger, ‘Gypsies’ by David Jones, ‘Llywn Onn’ by Brian Hogg, and ‘Rain: Gift from the Heavens’ by Matt Klohs.

As a long-standing member of the SEQSW, Ash expressed the many joys of performing and conducting productions like this one.

“There are so many cool things, but I think my number one would be the community of it,” Ash said. “Our band is full of some wonderful and kind people, and being able to have fun and play music with them is a real privilege.

“I always love hearing the audience’s reactions to the music we play. This concert especially will be special because of the original pieces we will be playing.

“I am truly grateful to be able to collaborate so closely with our Australian artists. It’s something special for them to come in and have a chat with us so their pieces can really come to life. We’ve even been able to have some of them conduct their pieces during rehearsals.

“Come along for some great music and to support your Australian composers!”
