Pet owners can get into the Christmas spirit while supporting animals in need at the Sandgate Guide’s Santa pet photo fundraiser this month.

Returning for the first time since 2024, some familiar faces, including Santa (aka Fred Krebs), will be joined by photographer Bruce Redman for a festive day of furry friends and fundraising.

Fred, who also volunteers as town crier at local events, said volunteering runs in his family.

“I get a lot of satisfaction from being town crier,” Fred said.

“There was a funny encounter during our last Santa photo fundraiser where a family turned up with a Saint Bernard – beautiful dog, bigger than I – and hogged the seat, so I had to stand beside him.”

Bruce said the team aims to make the experience comfortable for pets and their families.

“We attempt to keep it all very calm, efficient and inviting for the families and their pets and, as a result, the pets don’t tend to get spooked,” Bruce said.

Supporting the Warra Animal Rehoming Centre

“Little treats are an essential item though!”

The Guides publisher Jodie Morphett said she was proud to be part of a team donating their time to support the cause.

“It’s a real team effort for a very worthwhile local cause,” Jodie said.

All proceeds will go to Warra Animal Rehoming Centre in Bracken Ridge.

Warra Animal Rehoming Centre assistant manager Shanae Coolledge said fundraising initiatives such as the Sandgate Guide’s event play an important role in raising awareness of Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) and the valuable work they do every day.

“The funds help improve animal welfare and support the centre’s ongoing commitment to providing animals in its care with the best possible standard of care,” Shanae said.

Attendees can also bring donations of towels, sheets, and blankets, as well as enrichment items and toys such as KONGs, scratching posts, and wand toys to help keep animals comfortable and entertained.

“If you are considering adopting from AWLQ Warra, we encourage you to reach out to our team or visit our facility to discuss the adoption process and learn more about the animals in our care,” Shanae said.
