Finding joy through music is the aim of a concert being held in Sandgate this month.
Voices of Hope, performed by the chamber music group The Notable Ensemble, will bring a note of happiness to the 4017.
Clarinetist Peter Handsworth said the group had performed several concerts together in the past three years.
“It’s tough times at the moment, and I would say for all of us, there’s a sense of uncertainty but also renewal,” he said.
“Something will come of all of this and there’s an opportunity there, through music, to find that expression of hope.”
The program of clarinet and strings will perform pieces by composers Heinrich Baermann, Alexander Krein, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and group member Alys Rayner.
“I’ll be talking very briefly about each composer throughout the program,” Peter said.
A Diverse Musical Experience for All Ages
“Alys Rayner is a lovely viola player and a lovely person, and her music has an intensity to it, but also a delicacy as well.
“It stretches your ear and asks, ‘What does music mean to you?’
“I’ve been playing clarinet for 50 years, and one of the composers I’ve found I really enjoy is (British composer) Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a man of colour, whose music was inspired by Brahms around the turn of the century.
“The piece from him is very Brahms-like, but lighter. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor harks back to the masters, but with a lighter tone, and this piece of his we’re doing has been a real find.”
Peter added local music fans should not be put off by the concept of “chamber music”.
“All music has a history to it, and although this is a bit of a walk through the museum of older pieces, there’s contemporary music there too, for listeners of any age,” he said.
“I believe we’re all seeking some kind of truth, some beauty and some goodness in the world, and music doesn’t take sides.
“Chamber music is a way of giving our physical bodies rest while giving our mind the space and time to examine who we are. It’s meditative.”
Ticket prices for the concert start at $10 for students. You can get your tickets here.
