Boondall State School is celebrating a significant milestone this year, marking 100 years of educating young locals.
The party starts on Friday, 28 March in the school hall with a marching band reunion, and continues the following day with festivities including a mini-fete, market stalls, raffles and a display of school memorabilia and records.
Event Highlights
There will be plenty of activities for children, including an animal farm, a jumping castle and rides.
Celebration coordinators Carly Dempsey and Karen Johnson are both former students, and their children now attend Boondall State School.
“This whole community is what makes this school special,” Karen said.
“We’ve had so many past teachers, parents and students who have sent their children here, and so many are keen to come to celebrate this milestone.”
Carly added it had been wonderful hearing from past students.
“One lady in her 80s called us to say she remembered riding a horse to school,” she said.
“And when the creek at the bottom of the school flooded, the senior students were sent down there to lift the little ones over the water so they could still go to school.”
Notable past students include current Federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, breakfast radio host David ‘Luttsy’ Lutteral, and former Olympic swimmers Brenton Rickard and Melissa Gorman.
Plans for the school started in 1921, with local volunteers clearing the site of lantana and trees. The school finally opened in 1925 with just 61 students. While some trees planted in that first year remain on the grounds, the original school building burnt down in 1966.
One mystery organisers are keen to solve is the missing time capsule.
“I’m sure I remember, as a student, putting together things to bury in a time capsule, around 1991?” Carly said.
“But no one can find it, so if anyone out there knows if there was a time capsule and where it is, please let us know! We’re worried it might be under the car park.”
