Laurie’s Beach Walk

The monthly beach walks on the sand flats of our Bramble Bay have returned.

Many walkers take the time to enjoy the beach front from the top of the sea wall, but this free, guided walk at low tide shows people the marine critters of many shapes and sizes that inhabit the foreshore – from shell house worms to tiny blue gastropods, mud whelks and soldier crabs.

Keep Sandgate Beautiful Association (founded by Laurie Jeays in 1971) promotes the monthly beach walk as one of its many aims to enhance and preserve the natural beauty of the 4017 area.

Honoring Laurie Jeays and Protecting the Bay

The walk is called Laurie’s Beach Walk to honour and recognise the community stalwart, Laurie Jeays, who began the beach walks in 2006. The walks continue to share his enthusiasm for the environment, his research on the life of the bay, and to educate visitors and locals about our precious world.

Laurie died aged 79 in 2016, and throughout his life crusaded tirelessly for the environment and the protection of the local foreshore and wetlands.

The monthly walks at low tide engage people for approximately two hours. This year some walks are scheduled for 2pm and others at 9am. Bookings are necessary and can be made through Humantix. Further details and dates and times are available in the monthly Sandgate Guide and on the Keep Sandgate Beautiful Facebook and web page

The next walks are on Tuesday, 11 March at 2pm and Friday, 4 April at 9am
