In 2024, a small group of students from Sandgate District State High School (SDSHS), including myself, embarked on two exciting and transformative hiking expeditions through the breathtaking wilderness of Mount Barney National Park.
Like high school, this journey was a mountain climb, literally!
Overcoming obstacles, navigating through steep challenges and terrain, shedding blood, sweat and tears, until finally reaching the peak, proud of the journey, accomplishments and friendships made along the way.
On this trip, we were required to navigate our trail using a map and compass, relying on each other’s skills and intuition to get us back home within a two-day hike.
Lessons Learned and Memories Made
Students who took part said it was “extremely beneficial and fun”.
“The unique experiences I had with my peers and very reliable and informative teachers, were one to remember,” one student said.
“And the experience certainly further exposed me to the idea of expanding my knowledge around nature and spending more time in it.”
Another student added it was an “amazing experience”.
“The activities were set out very well,” they said.
“We got to explore, adventure and have fun at Maroon, and it is a memorable experience I will remember for the time to come.”
Personally, just like school, this experience allowed me to gain new life skills, work alongside peers I didn’t know and build connections.
Like finishing Year 12, all of our efforts and newfound skills gained throughout the years will continue to be put to the test.
