The Brighton Foreshore Parklands are set to undergo improvements, with upgrades planned in the area near 12th Avenue and 19th Avenue.

Following the input from the community, Brisbane City Council released its final concept plan late last year, focusing on revitalising the esplanade along Flinders Parade.

Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy said he was excited to see progress on the project, which he called “a long time coming”.

“I have been advocating for an upgrade of our Brighton Foreshore since being first elected, and to see works finally happening is a massive win for our community who have supported my calls for almost 10 years,” he said.

“Based on community feedback, these subtle upgrades will be in keeping with the relaxed and natural aspects of the Brighton Foreshore.”

Accessible Beach Access and Future Plans

The planned improvements include an amenities building at the end of 19th Avenue, offering an accessible adult change facility and accessible beach access. This will be the only location in Brisbane offering people with disabilities or limited mobility direct access to the beach.

“This is a massive win for the community and will mean everyone living in our community can enjoy one of the very best natural assets Brisbane has to offer,” Cr Cassidy said. “As we welcome Paralympians in 2032, I hope people from around the world will be able to use this access and have lasting memories of Brisbane and Brighton.”

Thanks to a $5 million Federal Government grant, the first stage of works is set to begin, focusing on the upgrades in the 12th and 19th Avenue recreation areas and adding new park furniture between 9th and 19th Avenue. Cr Cassidy thanked Anika Wells MP for her efforts in securing the funding to help kickstart the project.

Other elements of the final concept plan, such as pathway improvements, will require further investigation and additional funding.

Cr Cassidy said that while he was disappointed pathway widening could not be accommodated in the current phase, he was glad to see the improvements underway.

“There is plenty more to be done, but it won’t be long before locals can enjoy the amazing improvements we’ll see along the foreshore,” he said.
