When Sandgate Hawks player Jarvis Poppleton suffered a devastating ACL rupture and torn meniscus in 2021, his future in football seemed uncertain.
However, with perseverance, a supportive club and expert care from Sandgate Physical Health Clinic (SPHC) physio Jack, his injury became a story of triumph.
Jarvis, who joined the Hawks in 2017, said he loved the game not only for its fitness but also the friendships formed.
“There’s no better way to catch up with your mates than running around and having a kick,” Jarvis said.
While captaining the under-18s team in 2021, his season ended abruptly with a severe knee injury requiring surgery and reconstruction. He said watching his team win the premiership from the sidelines was bittersweet.
“It was heartbreaking not being on the field with them,” he said.
Jarvis’ recovery began with SPHC physio Jack, who immediately outlined a plan for surgery and rehabilitation.
“Jack identified the severity of my injury and pointed me in the right direction for surgery and recovery,” he said.
After surgery, Jarvis followed a structured rehabilitation program provided by Jack.
“We adjusted his program as he progressed, ensuring his recovery was as smooth as possible,” Jack said.
Milestones like running again after his operation boosted Jarvis’ spirits.
“That moment made me optimistic that I was on track to return to footy sooner than I’d hoped,” Jarvis said.
In 2023, after more than 18 months away from footy, Jarvis made a full return.

“Pulling on the Hawks jersey again felt amazing,” he said. “Thanks to Jack and the SPHC team, I had complete confidence in my recovery.
“Jack provided exercises and advice on strapping, recovery, and warmups to avoid re-injury. I’ve continued to use many of these to this day.”
Jack said seeing Jarvis back on the field was incredibly rewarding.
“It’s why we do what we do – to help athletes regain confidence in their bodies,” Jack said.
Jarvis’ hard work culminated in helping the senior team win their first premiership in 30 years during his second season back.
“After missing my under-18s grand final, this was one of my proudest achievements,” Jarvis said.
For this Hawk, the sky is truly the limit.
