A local author has fused classic storytelling and cutting-edge technology to bring sci-fi graphic novel trilogy The Montague Odyssey to life.
With a theme that reflects our current challenges while blending them with hopeful aspirations for the future, the books (drawing inspiration from Star Trek: The Next Generation) are intended for readers between the ages of five and 10.
According to author Jared Franks, the story holds up a mirror to societal issues – our relationship with technology, the environment, and each other – encouraging readers to confront these challenges through the lens of the characters’ journeys.
“For over two decades, I’ve been collecting ideas from thought leaders, scientists and inventors, knowing that one day I’d channel them into a meaningful project,” Mr Franks said.
Sci-fi with AI
This phase also involved adopting AI technologies as collaborative partners, enabling the author to not only refine his writing and explore new creative directions but also to revolutionise his visual elements.
Illustrations used throughout the series were generated by AI tools and then individually crafted in a painstaking layer-by-layer process to form cohesive and visually stunning scenes.
“Every image is designed to feel like a snapshot from a cinematic experience, capturing the energy, emotion and detail of a living, breathing world,” Mr Franks said.
However, The Montague Odyssey is more than just a means of entertainment, with Mr Franks adding that “it’s a gateway to exploration, growth and connection”.
“Stories spark curiosity, challenge perceptions and foster empathy, laying the groundwork for a richer understanding of the world and our place within it,” he said.
According to Mr Franks, the series offers a vision of what’s possible when humanity embraces collaboration, empathy and innovation – including the progressions made by AI.
“Like any tool, AI reflects its creators and it’s humanity’s responsibility to guide its development,” Mr Franks said.
In 2025, a newly reimagined edition of The Montague Odyssey Book One will be released, bringing a “more refined and thematically developed story to life.”
