ConverSANDSions Locals Supporting Locals is a free mini expo designed to inform community members about services and support in the area.

The expo will be held this month at The Sands Bowlo, giving locals the opportunity to meet the people behind community organisations and learn about the valuable resources they provide.

The event is hosted by Kedron-Wavell’s chaplain Nicole Whitbread, who supports both members and guests at the venue, as well as the broader community.

“It’s important for the community to know what’s available to them in their local area – not only for themselves but for others – you never know who might need to know what you know,” Nicole said.

Several community organisations will attend, including SANDBAG, HammondCare, Brighton Wellness Hub, Womenspace and other groups that support the community through social programs, resources and assistance.

Attendees will also hear from two guest speakers who have made significant contributions to the community: Pete Vance, a well-known musician and figure in Sandgate, and Amanda Jackes, the Manager Director at Woodfordia Inc and the producer of the Woodford Folk Festival and The Planting.

Nicole said Pete and Amanda would provide valuable insights on the importance of community.

“To have two beautiful people who have contributed so much to the community in so many ways is fantastic,” she said.

Inspiring Guest Speakers

Pete, a Sandgate resident for 15 years, has long been involved in local cultural events. He has written and performed theme songs for the Einbunpin Festival, Jingle All the Bay and the Bluewater Festival.

Pete said it was an honour to be invited to speak at the expo and reflect on the importance of the arts.

“I’ve been performing all my life,” he said. “It’s a real passion, and music – the ‘universal language’ – helps me connect and celebrate with community.

“The power of the arts in all its forms is in telling and sharing stories – an entertaining, engaging and enriching experience for all.”

His message at the expo will focus on the importance of connection, creativity and celebration within the community.

“Together we can support and enrich our lives towards a better quality of life for all,” he said.

Amanda said a thriving community was built on trust, inclusivity, shared purpose and mutual support.

“It thrives when people feel they have a voice and a role to play,” Amanda said. “Local events are a catalyst for this – they create opportunities for people to gather, share their stories and celebrate their culture. By engaging with local doers and creatives, fostering collaboration and addressing shared challenges, these events strengthen the fabric of a community.

“They remind us of the power of connection and the magic that happens when we work together.”

She hopes the audience leaves the expo with a renewed sense of possibility through engaging with the local community.

“The message is simple yet profound: community is our greatest resource, and every individual has something valuable to contribute,” she said. “Encouraging people to embrace their creativity, support one another and take small, meaningful actions that build a stronger, more sustainable future.

“Together, we can all be part of living in a vibrant, inclusive and resilient community where everyone is noticed and thrives.”
