Local musician Rexy has been named a finalist in Brisbane City Council’s music mentorship program The QUBE Effect.
The Bald Hills resident, who won the Sandgate Youth Festival in 2023, will participate in the 12-month program, where industry professionals guide inspiring young musicians.
Rexy said he was ecstatic to receive the call about being named a finalist.
“When I applied to be a part of QUBE Effect, I didn’t think I had much chance to get in,” Rexy said. “There are quite a few music artists on QUBE Effect that I love listening to and to think that now I get to do the same thing that they did. It’s amazing.”
Rexy, an indie pop/alternative artist based in Brisbane, discovered a passion for writing and producing music during quarantine. Rexy’s music draws influence from pop, R&B, indie folk, shoegaze and alternative rock.
A Year of Mentorship and New Beginnings
As one of the 12 finalists this year, Rexy will collaborate with mentors to explore various aspects of the music industry such as publicity, music licensing, goal setting and creating a music video.
Rexy plans to make a music video for their unreleased track ‘cherry red’.
“The song depicts thoughts and feelings about having a crush on someone who you suspect likes you back because of the way you talk and interact with them,” Rexy said. “The line the title comes from is from the chorus, which says, ‘You go cherry red when you’re talking about me’ and in my opinion, it really represents the idea of the song.”
In addition to The QUBE Effect, Rexy plans to release a debut EP later this year.
“I don’t want to give much away but some of the songs that will be on this EP are a little bit of a departure from my energetic indie pop sound, taking more inspiration from indie folk, small room and lo-fi indie,” they said.
“But some songs like ‘cherry red’ are still very indie pop inspired. I also hope to be able to do more gigs throughout the year and obviously, The QUBE Effect is something I’m very excited about for this year.”
