This year, Clean Up Australia Day celebrates 35 years of cleaning up our beautiful Australian environment. The day has now become the nation’s largest community-based environmental event, drawing volunteers from all walks of life.
Since 1990, 22 million Australians have donated their time as part of 34 years of Clean Up Australia Days. Join Keep Sandgate Beautiful Association at Decker Park on Sunday, 2 March to help celebrate 35 years of cleaning up and to help us beat our total of 33 volunteers in 2024!
In 1990, Ian Kiernan organised a group of friends to create the first Clean Up Australia Day to clean up around Sydney Harbour. Sadly, the need to clean rubbish from our environment, particularly our marine environment, has become even more critical.
By 2025, it is predicted that 99% of seabirds will have ingested plastic.
By 2050, it is estimated that plastic in the oceans will outweigh fish.
Join the Effort at Decker Park
KSBA has organised a Clean Up Day in Decker Park and surrounds for a number of years. In 2024, our volunteers removed a total of 29 bags of rubbish from the area and much of this was comprised of small plastic lids, wrappers and straws. It’s important to remove these small plastic items as they find their way into the ocean, break down and become the micro plastics poisoning marine animals.
This year we’ll set up at the shelter shed closest to the Decker Park car park. Participants need only to turn up on the day any time between 7am and 9am. First, please register with the KSBA site supervisors, Carol Guard and Rod Carey. You’ll be issued with a pair of gloves and a collecting bag. The supervisors will also indicate a suitable area to collect in. Children accompanied by an adult are very welcome. Once you’ve finished collecting, take your bag to the site supervisors and if possible, give them an indication of what kinds of rubbish you found as this information is entered into the Clean Up Australia Day data.
