Sandgate Men’s Shed Branches Out for Mental Health

Within the national movement known as Men’s Sheds, which is about 1300 sheds strong, our Brighton location stands out in engendering awareness for men’s wellness in the community – in particular, mental health.

From participating in the Blue Trees Project to partnering with the Bracken Ridge Lions Train Day in November, the Sandgate Men’s Shed has an edge in fostering fellowships and collaboration.

A Community Effort for Mental Health Awareness

According to Ross Smith, secretary of Sandgate Men’s Shed Inc, the organisation has a history of growth, having relocated from St Margaret’s Church to Brighton Health Campus in 2016 to facilitate better community involvement.

“We do lots of stuff for the 4017 community, including the public, community organisations and Metro North Health,” Mr Smith said.

Mr Smith became involved with the Blue Trees Project after being inspired by the sight of many blue trees, which are painted to promote mental health awareness throughout Australia (and the world) while travelling in a caravan.

The painting of a long-dead tree next to Brighton Health Campus’s entrance and the placing of numerous handcrafted ornamental flowers in trees nearby have become hallmarks of the Men’s Shed’s take on the project.
