A local team is rallying support for their participation in this year’s 50th Variety Bash, a charity motoring event aimed at helping children who are sick, disadvantaged or living with a disability.

On 27 April, the crew for Car 4017, led by captain ‘Jimbo’ (Jim Herold), will host a fundraising event on Rainbow Street in Sandgate, supported by local businesses Bangin Beans, Sandgate Mowers and Bridgestone Select Sandgate.

Jim will be joined by crew members Doug, Jason and Monique on the 10-day journey in August, travelling from St George to Port Macquarie via Adelaide, all in the name of supporting Variety The Children’s Charity.

“This is a culmination of years in planning where mates band together for a worthy cause and raise funds and necessary equipment for the remote regional schools and programs,” Jim said.

Car 4017 is a 1982 XE Ford Falcon station wagon, named Kings of Atlantis. With a water theme inspired by Jim’s business, Briz Pool Co/The Plunge Pool People, the vehicle features a golden trident, a 40-litre water tank and three sprays to soak unsuspecting onlookers.

A Tough Road for a Great Cause

As the team heads out on their more than 6,000-kilometre journey across rough outback terrain, they’ll be accompanied by a medic car, breakdown support cars, buses and trailers.

“The roads can be unforgiving with creek crossings, mountain climbs, and forest tracks and the odd trek through private properties – many gates to open and close,” Jim said.

Despite the challenge, he said the cause was more than worth it.

“The names and chats between school principals, teachers and parents, so grateful to stop and listen to our adventures,” he said. “Also, the love of outback adventures with your mates, the thrill of the next run, which surely tests the motor car and your patience.

“Of course, and not least, the smiles on the dials of children from many walks of life when you pull up blasting your air horns and a quick squirt of water.”

This month’s fundraising event at Bangin Beans will feature raffle prizes, a sausage sizzle and a chance to nominate someone to get dunked in the dunk tank, with the goal of raising at least $8.5K.

“Without the financial support from donations, fundraising events and business partners, none of this would be possible,” Jim said.
