An initiative aimed at improving the wellbeing of local children and families is taking shape, thanks to the efforts of a mother and daughter team from Baaia on Flinders Parade.

Robyn Ridings, the café owner, and manager Donna Mayo have teamed up with local businesses, including Woolworths Sandgate and Cabbage Patch Discount Grocer, to launch Shoes, Books and Breakfast in selected schools.

Robyn said the initiative, which focuses on providing shoes, books and a healthy breakfast to families who may be struggling, came from their deep-rooted desire to give back to the community.

“We want to ensure that every child has the opportunity to start the day with a nutritious meal and the necessary resources for their education,” Robyn said. “We believe that by providing essential items like shoes and books, alongside a healthy breakfast, we can help set children up for success both academically and personally.”

Nutritious Breakfast Program Expands in Schools

Part of the initiative is the Nutritious Breakfast Program, which Robyn said currently operates one day a week in selected schools, with plans for expansion.

“The Nutritious Breakfast Program operates by offering healthy and balanced meals to children before they start school,” she said. “These meals are designed to provide essential nutrients that support cognitive function, energy levels and overall health. By starting the day with a nutritious breakfast, children are better equipped to focus, learn and participate actively in their classes.”

Woolworths Sandgate has been a key partner in promoting the initiative, having already supported a breakfast program at one school for some time. Other local businesses and members of the community have donated books, vouchers and other essential items. The Sandgate Guide is also a proud sponsor.

Robyn said local schools had identified children who would benefit most from the initiative and that she and Donna had been working closely with the schools to better understand students’ specific needs.

“The distribution of schoolbooks and shoes is done in a discreet and respectful manner, ensuring that all children receive these items without any stigma,” she said.

Local businesses, organisations and individuals can support the initiative. Donations in the form of books, new children’s shoes and funds are welcomed, as well as volunteers to help with breakfast meal preparation and distribution. Businesses can also play a role by promoting the initiative.

Robyn thanked everyone who had supported Shoes, Books and Breakfast so far.

“Sandgate residents have shown a strong desire to support the case, with many individuals and businesses stepping up to contribute in various ways,” she said. “Your contributions have made a tangible difference in the lives of local children and families.”
